Isaiah Stanback and Sean Lee and both for the same reason.

Before Byron Jones was the Freak, Stanback was that. It was if someone listed all the traits of an athlete and then delivered him except for one problem. He could never stay healthy enough to reach his potential, not even in high school. But when he was healthy? Magic.

Sean Lee would be considered one of the, if not the, best D players of all time, rivaling Bob Lilly and Randy White, if he could have stayed healthy. When he was in the game, the D always played better and his D football IQ was off the charts. I watched him react to the QB handing the ball off to the RB before he even did it. He knew the play before it happened because of his football IQ. He was also an excellent textbook tackler and wrapped up his man every time.

I do not think he ever fully recovered form the injury he got at Penn State, which was the reason he wasn't a high first rounder.

Sean Lee is my all time "what might have been" Cowboy.

I have never been as disappointed by any player as I was with Morris Claiborne.

But probably my favorite pet cat who disappointed was Josh Brent. I really thought he would become a stud DT, and maybe he would have been, but he was just too troubled to make football a priority.

CouchCoach:

I'd have to throw Randy Hughes into the all time "what might have been" discussion. He was a thumper.

Go Cowboys!

You’re selling Alexander Wright’s speed way short.

“Wright was one of the fastest players in the league, winning the NFL's "Fastest Man" competition in 1992 and 1993. In May 1991, he was timed to have run the 40-yard dash in 4.14 seconds.[5] He was also the strongest wide receiver on the team.”

Was a decent kick off returner as well.
Got a 4th rounder from Al Davis if memory serves.

Agree. When playing at his best Seattle 2012 for example, Lee had HOF ability IMO. Just way too many injuries and time missed.

Good points Stas. He had all the tools except the ability to catch the ball, lol.
I think they invented the term "straight line athleter" just for him.

No matter how fast you are, can't get open if you can't cut.

This time of year is when “Pet Cat Disease” (or PCD) hits the strongest. You know the symptoms- Cowboys fans breaking into a cold sweat after watching a draft prospect’s overrated college highlight film, then falling in draft love with a mediocre pro prospect this team “has to have”. We were thrilled when they were drafted. We’ve all probably had at least 1 or 2 pet cats that turned out to be not that great.

Which leads me to ask: Who are the all time overrated Cowboys fans Pet Cats of the past? Here’s my short list:
  • Rico Gathers- a former basketball player drafted in the 6th round, projected as a TE. Gathers quickly became an OTA and preseason legend- especially against UFAs in preseason games. You know like a 175 lb safety from a directional mid-major school that would never make an NFL roster. I’ve never seen a more overrated player than Gathers, who stayed stashed on this roster for too long.
  • Beau Morgan- a former QB from Air Force who was being converted to RB in the Jimmy Johnson/Barry Switzer era. Morgan was an UFA who was essentially just a camp body who happened to lead the team in rushing in preseason. Which somehow convinced loads of fans that he was the real deal. Two straight preseasons Morgan led the team in rushing. And two straight Septembers, the Cowboys cut him, much to the pain of many Cowboys pet cat owners.
  • Alexander Wright- a former second round pick of the Cowboys in Jimmy’s second draft in 1990. Wright was drafted because of his 4.4 speed and nothing else. He was fast, but as the old sayings go, “He couldn’t catch a cold”, or “Couldn’t play dead in a western movie”. Fast doesn’t make you a football player. Wright’s best year as a Cowboy was his first, when he caught 11 passes. Was traded to the raiders in ‘92.
There are many more infamous overrated pet cats. Who’s on your list?

My question is why do you refer to a favorite player as a pet cat? You might be a cat liver and that's fine but to use pet cat to describe a favorite college player that you want the Cowboys to draft makes no sense. I never heard of a favorite player referred to as a pet cat until you started using it.

It's a common term that has been used for a long time.

Reggie Robinson.

4th round dart throw was being screamed about as an immediate starter right after the draft. I could just about see the fallen faces when he didn't even play and was only active for like 5 games. And then switched to S!!!!!!!!!! I think some people are still crying.

I've been following the NFL for 60 years and NEVER heard that until it was used here. I've never heard or read that a national sportswriter or broadcaster say that at any time.
