All Jerry had to do was keep Kris Richard, hand him the entire defense back in 2018, and this team would be 3 years into building a Doomsday type defense instead of drafting the foundation of one.

Interchangeable DE to DT defensive linemen, fast play making LBs, and tall DBs that can knock away or intercept the ball. Sounds familiar?

I was concerned with Quinn hiring because of Lionel Vital at Director of Scouting ind Dallas. Vital was in Atlanta as the Director of Player Personnel (See Will McClay). They had the Vic Beasley turmoil with Drimoff bringing in Pioli who said Beasley was too small to rush the passer. Well 15.5 sacks later Vital was right but out of a job.

Jerry should be out on camera announcing picks with his grandson. That means he is not in the draft room selecting players and that is how you got Jabril Cox.

Let Owners own, Coaches coach, and Scouts/Pro personnel evaluators draft. If the Owner can stay out of the construction site, McClay and Vital can build a Super Bowl team .

Here is the Falcons 2015 and 2016 Drafts with Lionel Vital:
2015 Draft
Round Pick # Overall Name Position College
1 8 8 Vic Beasley Linebacker Clemson - Pro Bowler
2 10 42 Jalen Collins Cornerback LSU - Starter
3 9 73 Tevin Coleman Running Back Indiana - Starter
4 8 107 Justin Hardy Wide Receiver East Carolina
5 1 137 Grady Jarrett Defensive Tackle Clemson - Pro Bowler
7 8 225 Jake Rodgers Offensive Tackle Eastern Washington
7 32 249 Akeem King Defensive Back San Jose State
2016 Draft
Round Pick # Overall Name Position College
1 17 17 Keanu Neal Safety Florida - Pro Bowler
2 21 52 Deion Jones Linebacker LSU - Pro Bowler
3 18 81 Austin Hooper Tight End Stanford - Pro Bowler
4 17 115 De'Vondre Campbell Linebacker Minnesota - Starter
6 20 195 Wes Schweitzer Guard San Jose State
7 17 238 Devin Fuller Wide Receiver UCLA

To be fair Richard's D wasn't good either it only looked good compared to Nolan's. We haven't had a good DC since Phillips
I was never impressed with Richard.
Kris was never given full control as Marinelli was the DC.

All I know is Kris Richard improved the areas he could control in 2018 and as a defensive coach he never had a losing season. He and Dennis Thurman were responsible for too many Pro Bowl DBs and great defenses for anyone to say they did not have a great impact on great defenses. Byron Jones had his best years under Richard.

Remember Marinelli DL stunts cost us that playoff game in LA.

I would call that fair.

Me either. He got the best out of Byron but besides him, nada. If he was that good he would be a DC somewhere now instead he's just a DB coach.
Not necessarily. Its a good old boys club at the end of the day. Thats why one can be a mediocre head coach for a decade and fail into an offensive coordinator role.

Richard was in such high demand that he was unemployed in 2020. He hasn't had a Defensive Coordinator position since he left Seattle (2017).

To be fair, Richard wasn't the DC and had very little impact on roster decisions. He was never given a fair shake to take control of the defense. It was defense by committee and that doesn't work anywhere.

I liked Richard......but I by no means would regret us getting rid of him. I think he got a tough break but Quinn is a much better DC...

Jerry own the team so he gets to do whatever he wants, even if it means he sabotages himself. He wants credit so badly for building a winning team he'll live with a quarter century of futility just hoping for one year of glory.
like almost every other owner as well

Some of you Richard boot lickers might find this hard to believe but not everyone was impressed with him either. I don't like how we got here but I think where we are right now is on the verge of something special. We have to give this youth injection we just received a chance. Our coaching staff has a large crop of young men to mold into a pro football squad. Let them do their job and then we will see what we really have here.

I'm not so sure that would have be a good thing. The Cowboys might have been retooling again this year.

Richard was an intriguing story. He went from Head Coaching candidate to bottom of the barrel really quickly.
