This right here symbolizes the Cowboys—mediocre player caring more about numbers and sunglasses than football. At least when Irvin went out partying in mink coats he showed up at practice and caught balls until he puked and then caught a few more.

Meh, I kinda like it.

He needs a fresh start and mentally this might help. Either he’ll play a lot better and stay or he won’t and he’ll leave. His number doesn’t really matter except to him.

just learn the new defense and let’s go.

Doesn't seem like a smart move financially but Jerry probably has him covered. Business ventures!

Doesn’t matter to me, bum will only wear it for a year more than likely.

cowboys don’t retire numbers, if there’s any id like to see never given out they are probably 8,12,22, 33, 74,

33 has already been re issued a few times

This guy gets on my nerves more and more......
Changing his jersey number adds to that? Smith talked to Romo first, and Romo, as good as he was, wasn't the level of guys like Staubach, Lilly and Emmitt. The team can't make the number of every high quality Cowboy player from the past off limits.

I’m just here for the comments.

lol what 6 figures that mean ALL of them none ever sold LOL

however if hes allowed to wear mansters number why not Romos..NFL has shortage of numbers so it happens..

people upset over this should realize how many iconic numbers are currently being used..its a necessary evil..get passed it..weird seeing LB with 9 though.. tb12 doesn't like it LOL

and Jones management gave No.9 to a guy that could well be cut next year ?

wow, i thought they'd think enuff about all time legend Romo not to toss his number around as such .

... anyone gonna eventually have number #8 or No. #22 .. ??
I enjoyed Romo and agree he was a very good QB, but do you really put him at the level of 3 time Super Bowl winners and the NFL's all time leading rusher?

There have been a lot of great Cowboy players over the years. The Cowboys can't make the numbers of all of them off limits.

who really gives a **** what number he wears? He worn #9 in HS and ND. It is so not a big deal that he wants to wear #9 for the Cowboys. I'm all for it if he plays like he did in HS and at ND. This is a total non-issue.

I think people are more upset over the pageantry he made of it. That’s what bothers me anyway. I think the idea of retiring numbers is stupid.
