BTB: Cowboys’ patience in Randy Gregory could finally pay off in 2021

The rules changed with regards to Weed.

Gregory is actually considered a high character player that just has what is basically an addiction to Weed.

Gregory is an interesting player. He is one of the most well-spoken players on the team and had the highest SAT score of any player drafted in the Jerry era.

On the field in college he seemed to defy physics with an uncanny ability to bull-rush OTs that outweighed him by 80 to 100 pounds.

Most teams look at their 28 year old players that have been there since they were drafted in the second round and think to themselves we got a lot from this player perhaps it is time to move on. Only the Dallas Cowboys would sit on someone this long and continue to say to themselves this is the year for Randy.

Randy and Jaylon are literal poster boys for everything that is messed up with this franchise. Not sure how it is that people still support this kind of nonsense. We have a drunken buffoon running the show. that is the only reason a Randy Gregory can even still exist.

If history is any guide we can expect the first actual reasonable season from Randy in his entire life. Then we will pay him like he is going to be the next Lawrence Taylor. Then he will completely shut it down.
What a completely dumb and uninformed take. Jaylon? Absolutely. But Randy has been dealing with bipolar disorder and treated his symptoms with marijuana. As a person he is top notch and has worked hard to be where he is. He looked good last season. Do you actually follow the players off the field? Randy's mentality and work ethic couldn't be further from pompous Jaylon's.

Why would they have ever cut Gregory?

He didn't get paid while suspended and therefore didn't count against the cap for the game he was suspended.

He showed up to camp in 2018 after his longest suspension and Marinelli said he was in the best shape of any player on the team.

Jaylon had played well before the contract and most fans/media thought the contract was a bargain at the time.

I'm not a fan of Jaylon but he has never been in any trouble or that type of issue.

It is really difficult to evaluate defensive players on the Cowboys roster in 2019 or 2020 because coaching was a disaster.
- In 2019 Kris Richard basically became the D-Coordinator and tried to change the scheme and that was a fail.
- In 2020 Mike Nolan tried to radically change the scheme with no real off-season and that was a huge fail.

It does seem that players developed a sense of accomplishment under Garrett/Marinelli despite not really having accomplished anything.
- Jimmy would have sent Taco straight to the asthma field. His overwhelming sense of entitlement would never have happened with Jimmy as HC.
- It does seem that some of the silliness exhibited by players like Jaylon has subsided since McCarty became the head coach.
- What was that stupid name of their little club? I think my mind intentionally blocked that from memory. I have not heard players reference that since McCarthy became HC.

I don't give a **** what his excuses are. I am sure they are all good excuses but that doesn't change the fact that they are excuses. He is 28 years old going into year 6 and has done nothing. Year after year we count on him to be a pass rusher. Year after year he does not deliver.

Both of those were chances at high level prospects for a low cost. There is always a chance the bets don't pay off. There was the cost of a 2nd round pick, but due to the situation the financial cost has been very little. There was no need to move on.

The situation has changed for gregory. It might pay off big time, and it is at the 2nd most valuable position behind qb.

Lol, you're clearly some wannabe "man's man" boomer who sees everything in black and white and has no business commenting on other's hurdles, let alone someone who has worked hard enough to make the NFL. Life is about nuance and shades of grey, son, not generic platitudes and tired anecdotes. Randy has fought his demons and constantly come back ready to play when he could, it's not his fault there was an outdated policy and outdated rules that didn't align with what he needed to do to deal with his condition.

I say this on almost every thread but I seriously wonder what joy people like you actually derive from following this team that you appear to hate. This doesn't mean you have to blindly love everything and everyone, your Jaylon gripes are completely valid, but you clearly want to make mountains out of molehills just to jerk yourself off by complaining and being negative. Why would you not root for a person like Randy who plays for your supposed favorite team and who has overcome so much just to be where he is?

Didn't see this thread before commenting in the other but I've also stated this several times that I think people are rubber stamping Gregory being good as golden whereas I'm so sure we can do that relying on him for a potential full season. I'd test him if I were an opposing offense. Hopefully, we get a pass rushing threat in the middle from one of our 89 DTs so Gregory isn't relied on as much but if that's not the case and Gregory struggles, like @Risen Star says, who else we got? For me, RDE is a question mark again until proven otherwise.

Trust him? For what?

Of course the team shouldn't assume all will be well and great with him and refuse to consider others who can do the job. They shouldn't do that regardless of his history of not being available.

Plus, realistically, he still hasn't proven much as a player.

But there is no harm in having him in the mix to see if he can stay straight. It should be easier with the NFL relaxing its policy on pot.

I agree more or less. Like all of us..we have to earn respect.

We will know soon enough. He needs a baby sitter like others have needed.

The timing and objective of these articles is laughable. What has Gregory done recently, to effort such an article?

Maybe not so much like others. His problem has really been with NFL rules regarding pot, and not with legal matters (criminal or civil). With NFL rules relaxing on pot the odds improve dramatically that he will be available. The question then just becomes how well he can perform.

I am sorry but I really do have to disagree. Only Al Davis and Jerry Jones draft guys like Randy and Jaylon in the second round. GMs get fired for making better decisions than this.

you might say that about Jaylon, but Gregory was a good second round pick. It didn't work out, but he had no injuries.
