Randy Gregory’s problems are not just weed. He is bipolar, which is a very real and challenging mental illness that requires consistent treatment in order to live a productive life. I know this because one of my own adult children is bipolar, and as a parent I can tell you that it is a very real challenge for people who live with it.

Randy Gregory has struggled with treatment options. Marijuana is often used by bipolar sufferers to help calm them down. It’s not a great medical option, but for many with bipolar it’s a cheaper, more accessible way to keep them from going off the reservation.

So when I hear fans talking about weed being his problem, it’s an extreme oversimplification. His problem is a mental disorder that requires medication to help that person avoid the manic highs and depressive lows and extreme mood swings that make daily life without treatment difficult. With proper medication, a person with bipolar disorder can live a relatively normal life. Without treatment, a bipolar sufferer can struggle just to function normally and consistently.

By the way, Charles Haley has bipolar disorder as well. You should read recent interviews with him. He talks about his problems before he accepted treatment. It almost derailed his career and life but he accepted his problem and proper treatment.

To the original question, “Do I trust Randy Gregory?” I do if he’s being effectively treated. If he can maintain proper treatment, he can be a very effective pass rusher.

I am really pulling for RG every day.
Well said. Randy is one of my favorite players on the team. He’s a good guy that’s fighting hard every day. I wish him well and hope he lights it up for the remainder of his time as a Dallas Cowboy!

Randy will end up being one of our 3 best defensive players this season.

I know that's not a huge leap on a team with a previously terrible defense though.

Still he's ready, and pretty sure it's a contract year. If any player would ever consider a home town discount let's hope it's Randy after all the patience Dallas has exercised with him.

That would be a great story and endear him to the fan base.

Do you trust him enough to hand him a big new contract if he does well this season?

I mean when he is in he is exciting but it is shocking to think that since he has come into the league he has only managed to have 10.5 sacks. I mean I thought that was a typo at first.

This is a great question and a difficult one to answer. This year being a contract year for Gregory, I expect he will be on his best behavior. If not, then the Cowboys have an easy answer for him when the year is over. But what if he plays really well, and he behaves for the entire year? Can they trust him enough to sign him to a big contract? What will Gregory be like if he gets that big contract? Will he let up on his behavior after getting paid? The Cowboys could have a really tough decision to make in 2022. I think they would love for him to have a breakout year this year, get his new contract and put his past behind him so they can move on from Lawrence. But, boy, is this going to be a tough decision.

Sad is the team that gives a man like Randy Gregory a big money guaranteed contract.

a hypothetical

This year iff gregory leads the league in sacks and makes big plays in big games , would you still be unhappy with the pick?

Yes we trust him! He is an impact player and will make a big difference for the defense. Every time he gets on the field he produces. Given a normal off season/training camp/preseason will do wonders for him.
Having a David Irving on the line would be fun. I really wanted to see what the three of them could do together. To bad it never happened.

Sooooo....what IS a great medical option?

Pharmaceutical grade anti- psychotics? Chemicals I wouldn't administer to my hamster.

I, like you, have a child with Bi-polar infliction. Medical grade marijuana has been a God send.

Personally.....there was a time when I was diagnosed.....not with Bi-Polarism, and was prescribed anti-psychotics......all I have to add is tread lightly. Most of that **** is detrimental. I mean, hang on to your lugnutz. Could be 12 hours of zero sanity.

Apologies.....back to topic.

BTW....Good post, Bob..

I've always contended that if Randy Gregory were on the field when we play the Packers in the playoffs at Jerry World in 2016, we would have won that game.

Our tired and incredibly slow pass rushers gave Aaron Rodgers all the time in the world to scan the field and complete passes. Randy's speed alone would have negated many, if not most, of Rodgers' completions.

I figured it would take him a few years to knock the rust off. I expect a good year out of RG. Watch how better he will be with Parsons playing. Double digit sacks for our puff, puff pass rush specialist.

I would be thrilled if Randy becomes a reliable dominant pass rushers that makes big plays that helps us win big games, signs a reasonable contract and continues to have success for many years to come.

If he was getting suspended for various things I'd be concerned....

But the only thing he was caught doing was something that is no longer illegal.

If he plays 17 games I'd wager he has more sacks this season that he had in prior years combined... 10.5.

He has the skills, was always either suspended or had something like that hanging over him.

He is in a contract year and hasn't made a ton of money. When a guy like that gets a head of steam, he can make some noise.

The article seems to be a bit too negative for me, in particular some of the comments:

"Because of all of the multiple suspensions by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy, Gregory is one slip up away from flushing his career in the league down the drain."

Unless I missed it, weren't all of those for marijuana? Or at least the majority of them?
Getting caught with pot in your system as I understand it is not a suspension anymore, you are required to get counseling, etc. but you can't be suspended. So I don't see he's "one slip" away from being suspended.

"A few injuries here and there early in his career and multiple suspensions stunted his growth/development as a pass rusher"

Not all college players can just jump into the NFL and be an immediate, consistent pass rusher. Lots of them take time to learn, after all they often are playing against very skilled and experienced NFL tackles, etc. Can't say Gregory is any less likely to be able to flourish.

"he has just one official start in 38 career games with the Cowboys since 2015"

That's probably tied into the suspensions, he has to get back in football shape after every suspension, and that's hard to do. I know every time I have to miss a couple of weeks or even a couple of months of workouts it's hard to get back to where you were when before the layoffs. Playing in the highly competitive NFL has to be even harder.

But I will say, barring missing a lot of time, during camp, preseason or regular season, he has to CONSISTENTLY show us he's entitled to be a full time (as much as anybody is in the modern NFL) starter, THIS YEAR. Yes the Cowboys have had patience with him, but it's not cost the team that much, salary-wise and they've certainly not held off from trying other avenues, such as signing free agents and drafting DEs.

Gregory is on the hot seat as much as anybody on the team, I've about run out of patience with him, if he doesn't really "shine" this season, if it was up to me he'd be a "gone pecan", as we say down South....

Plain talk about real issues. I share your concerns about bipolar and not having control and smoking pot to keep it in check. Had a GF who had it and it ruined her work as she could not keep a job and our personal relationship never lasted. You never knew what would set her off. Off her meds..off the wall. Which tells me Randy is a risk to relapse and the team is in jeopardy. All people want is to win and most of us do mot want to know about the person.
