Why Do New Draft Picks Say We Are a Marquee Franchise?

He explained it perfectly.

The Cowboys are the Kardashians of the NFL. Famous and rich for no reason other than what people before them did a lifetime ago.

This is spot on and a very appropriate analogy.

Mainly because the NFL, like American society, is all about the perception of success rather than success itself. Dallas has embodied perceived success by way of marketing and team value yet the trophy case has remained barren for 25+ years.

Truth

We have advanced past the first round in the playoffs three times in 25 years so why do new draft picks act so excited to go to a losing franchise with 25 years of playoff irrelevancy? It’s like being drafted by the Lions or Bengals except we have five super bowl wins a quarter of a century ago.
do they have a choice but to be happy? so what do you expect them to do? be sully? cry? say they are unhappy? its the draft. they go to the team that picked them or they wait another year to get redrafted. its the NFL. there is only 32 and there is only few hundred openings per year. so getting there is a big accomplishment onto itself. the fans are different than the players, we take these things into account and project it to the players drafted.

color me skeptical after the past 25 years.
I dont mean this as a cut but your talking about how you feel what a marque team is and thats the small view. Players want to play for us [mostly] TV wants us even when we blow. We're marque.

Top 3 sports franchises:

Dallas Cowboys (last Super Bowl appearance was 1996....or 25 years ago)

NY Yankees (last World Series appearance was 2009.....or 12 years ago)

NY Knicks (last NBA Finals appearance was 1999....or 22 years ago)

So team value does not obviously equate to team success.
I never claimed it did.

Anyone who discredits the relevance of the Cowboys in the world of sports, let alone just the NFL, is being silly.

I want the team to win. Their value is of minimal importance to me, but to discount how NFL players and most of the world, view the team is myopic. Players care, and care deeply, about branding and, most importantly, money. The Cowboys are and, for the foreseeable future, will continue to be the “marquee” team in the NFL with their only rival at any given time being whatever current team has a current dynasty.

The entire thread is a troll attempt

6 Consecutive Most Valuable Sports Franchise Champions. Jerry should sell hats and t-shirts to help fortify his reign on top. Hoping for 7 straight next year. Raise them ticket prices, Jerry!

The Cowboys and all other NFL teams have to deal with a hard cap which gives all teams a fair chance and makes the sport competitive. The Yankees can spend over $200M on a team payroll while the Pirates spend $50M. The Cowboys and other teams acquire players through the draft and free agency which is very fair and competitive. The Yankees don’t.

I don’t know about basketball and their soft cap since I haven’t watched a game in over 30 years. I haven’t watched a baseball game or followed baseball for almost 40 years so maybe my numbers are off.

My sincere apologies for posting my opinions on a forum. What was I thinking?

I was wrong, there are some Cowboys fans that value most revenue, biggest stadium, Forbes stats, and artwork as much as they love winning. I just didn’t realize fans like you existed.

The Cowboys have been winning. Just not winning in the postseason much and haven’t won a super bowl in a long while.

lol , no the cowboys are actually jerrys team.
you just are programmed to like them no matter what.

Many older fans dont like the owner, or the current players and coaches, but still have an interest in the team, so they still follow the team.
I AM an “older fan”, and all true fans are “programmed” to like them. I totally understand being frustrated and venting here, I’m just chuckling and rolling my eyes over people that guarantee that Dallas is doomed to fail.

Fans don’t care about revenue, biggest stadium, artwork, practice facilities, or net worth. Fans care about one thing: winning which means deep playoff runs.

Thirty plus years of the Jones cartel has lowered fan expectations to “I hope we’re competitive” & “maybe we can win the east”. Super Bowl or bust mentality is only valid for teams that have produced deep playoff runs in the past five years. Super Bowl? Hell we can win a div playoff game, at least not in the past 25 years.
Your question was about being a marquee franchise, which refers to drawing interest and attention. The Cowboys do that

“All true fans are programmed to like them” - Sir we disagree about true fans as fans come in all sizes, colors, etc and I love the Cowboys as much as anyone here. That doesn’t mean I have to like watching how the past 25 seasons have turned out, esp when it could have avoided by hiring a real gm.

Marquee franchise qualifications:
1. You are the gold standard of winning esp playoff games
2. You occasionally win a super bowl or at least play in a conference championship game
3. TV ratings, spotlight, value of team is irrelevant since this is about winning
4. See 1-3

Evidently they feel different than you do. Was this just a thread to slam the Cowboys? really see nothing more to this tread than the typical why do people or should people like the Cowboys.

Because we are the Fast and Furious of the NFL. We suck, but constantly make money and everyone watches.

‘We?’ We being who? Do you have a frog in your pocket? We being you and the people who gave you a like for this comment?

I, as a Cowboy fan, have no inferiority issues.

He explained it perfectly.

The Cowboys are the Kardashians of the NFL. Famous and rich for no reason other than what people before them did a lifetime ago.

Living off past glories? Every team that hasn’t won a Super Bowl for years does that. At least we HAVE a winning legacy. For every entitled Dallas fan that guarantees failure because they haven’t been able to strut at the watercooler for years, for every perpetually miserable, deadly serious “realist” that feels more enlightened, there are a hundred logical, reasonable fans who simply enjoy the game and hope for the best. Yes, Jerry Jones has failed many times as a GM, the culture of the franchise has failed too, but there are so many variables that are equally responsible. While the hype and glitz and entitlement many times DO draw parallels to the Kardashians—we ain’t them.

Discussing, lamenting, debating, venting—all natural, all expected on a fan forum, but we need to find a middle ground. Being perpetually miserable, convinced that the future holds nothing but failure robs people of the simple pleasure of being a fan. I choose to be optimistic and hopeful, I’m intrigued by this year’s team building, and I apologize for nothing.

Your mindset is up to you.

No one is happy with the past 25 years. Why must it always be extreme view points? Always unhappy “realist” or clueless rah rah?

As an NFL draft pick, I know I’m gonna bank big time, but as a player I want rings. You ain’t getting a ring in Dallas. Ever
If you think we are never winning a Super Bowl why be a fan and watch? Do something more productive with your time.

Regardless if some here feel Dallas does not deserve the spot light or attention means nothing fact is they are a spotlight team, they are a team media pays attention to. Hell many of the ESPN shows focus a lot of attention on the Cowboys. People taking their disappointment and making it to be well Cowboys are not a Marquee Franchise? tell it to the networks who focus so much attention to the Cowboys. Lions and Bengals? lol yeah they are attention grabbing teams.
