To me Steele is our new Parnell. We got some good run out of Parnell when he was here. However we weren't going to play Parnell over the vastly superior Doug Free ( I dont mean that last sentence. I just said it to trigger @xwalker ) I do however think Parnell is an apt comparison

Ok I was going with an "it depends", but I've changed to just say Collins.

Collins is the better player (maybe it is just IMO), so you go with the better player.

It just sucks he is such a bonehead off the field. But that is a different poll.

If no changes at LG, then I guess Collins is pro bowl ish and gets his position back.

But if they think Steele and Collins are both part of our "best 5 linemen", then it would depend on which one plays LG better.
Collins really wouldnt be an upgrade over Williams. He was a pretty mediocre LG. Might even be a downgrade from Williams

Collins until proven otherwise. He has the experience. Steele has proven himself to be worthy.

I could see him being cut or traded after the year to save on the cap. Steele still has a fair amount of upside to improve. At least we know if he doesnt improve, he is an adequate RT

Steele has proven to be a reliable backup at RT, but Collins has the potential to be an elite RT in this league. He is far better there, then he was inside at Guard.

Due to restructure, Collins has a contract that will keep him herein Dallas at least thru the 2022 season so sadly he will take back his RT spot not because of anything but his contract. Steele's contract ends after the 2022 season so he may just (through his agent) approach Dallas either this season or after this season and say "I've proven I am a capable starter at RT in the league so either play me or trade me."

Collins' dead money totals $13.95M after this season with a cap hit of $15.25M so Dallas would only 'save' $1.3M by releasing/trading him.

So releasing makes no sense, but trading might if we can get a solid asset back.

OT's are a commodity

Steele will turn 25 next June whereas Collins turns 29 next July. While 29 is not in any way 'old' for an NFL o-lineman, Collins missed all of 2020 with some type of hip injury after reporting to camp badly out of shape and this season got suspended 5 games due to missing drug tests and trying to bribe a lab collector.

Collins may have shown himself to be a better RT than Steele previously, the most recent 'sampling' shows that Steele appears more healthy and hungry so Dallas may have to examine biting the bullet so to speak and moving on from Collins in a switch to a younger RT.

I wasn't a big fan of Steele after his play last year but Steele did an admirable job filling for Collins while he was serving his bribery suspension but there's a huge difference in talent between the two....If Collins is in shape and ready to play then he should get his starting job back at right tackle....

I was thinking the same thing, but more so about the Cowboys losing Parnell to free agency. I think Steele is a little better than Parnell was in year 2. I also like Steele's offseason commitment to change his body and become a better player. It shows character. I would love to know what kind of player Josh Ball is. If he has anything at all, then going with Steele in 2022 with Ball as his backup might not be a bad decision.

Maybe Collins gets traded after the season. That saves only a bit more than $1 million on the CAP in 2022, but then he comes off the books in 2023 which is a $15 million CAP reduction.

I think Collins is still a better player than Steele, but I don't know if I want to put up with his off field nonsense anymore. If he misses more tests he could wind up suspended for the year. A RT like Collins could get a conditional 2nd round draft pick I think.

i want Collins at tackle, but I don’t see why people keep suggesting he’d be a mediocre guard.

He played the last 12 or so games in 2015, the year Romo went down (Collins wasn’t a starter at that point), do comparing Ron Leary and the 2014 oline to *rookie* Collins in the 2015 cluster **** makes no sense.

Then in 2016, yes Leary took over after 2.5~3 games, but let’s also keep in mind that the offense performed more or less the same against the Giants later in the season, and those were also the first two career games for Dak and Elliott.

I don’t know how much of the Chicago game Collins played in, but they were running on all cylinders

I just think we’ve seen improvement at RT and there’s little reason to think he wouldn’t play just as well at guard

This scares me.

Don't get me wrong, I can't complain about how bad Steele has played in 2021, but I still have a hard time believing this is the "Real Steele" after seeing him play last year.
