Well regarded horror films that you thought were meh

I get that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cutting edge at the time, but watching in the 80's I thought it was just dumb. I can't get into Suspiria either.

The original house where that was filmed was sold and moved to Kingsland, TX, a town across the lake, and turned into a restaurant.

I re-watched the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" the other day... I've watched it a few times over the years. And while I like it a little more than you, up and beyond the premise it strikes me as a Hershel Gordon Lewis movie from the 60's. The story is good. The dialog drives me nuts. Having the character of Sally do nothing but scream over the last 20 minutes or so is just too much for me.

I could see that.

But I love that movie. Love the back & forth between Clarice and the two serial killers in the film. Also think the autopsy sequence is excellent.

I thought the same.

The original hasn't aged well, but I thought it was done better. The creature at the end left something to be desired, but they didn't have today's special effects to sort it out.

Anyway the book blows away both versions IMO, where I'll take Kubrick's version of "The Shining" over King's either in book for or miniseries form.

i thought The Shining was the Bomb when i was a small kid when i saw it .. but over time i realized how average it really appears to be.

I do not believe many of those films would be considered "Well Regarded".

Yes Omen is overrated. However I will say. That one scene with the nanny on the roof saying it's all for you Damien is still creepy as heck.

Might ruffle feathers but Psycho was always overrated to me.

Recently the Witch was one that just did not do anything for me.

I agree on Psycho.

I think "Rear Window" is a far better movie... And more terrifying.

Some quick thoughts...

-Candy man– Not a bad series of movies. The first one was better than the rest (which is usually how it works).
-The Shining– To me one of the greatest films ever made... Not just in the horror genre.
-Blair Witch Project– It's a "love it or hate it" film. I love it. Not to the level of "The Shining" but a good film none-the-less.
-Rosemary's Baby– A decent film. Thought the ending was a big dar.k
-Cloverfield– A great horror film.
-Texas Chain Saw Massacre series– I preferred the 1st and 2nd sequels to the original (movies #2 and #3 in the series). I very much enjoyed the two movies with R Lee Ermy.
-Halloween Michael Myers– They're watchable at best
-Leprachaun series– Some yuks here and there, but that's about it.
-Child's play/ Chucky series (after the first 2)– I was never a big "Chucky" fan, but obviously a lot of folks liked the first couple
-Sinister series– Never watched it
--Sharknado series– Stupid... Which was the point.
-Scream series– I'll say the last 45 minutes of first movie are outstanding! Great finish.
-Mama– Have not watched yet.
-The Wicker Man– Not a bad flick but I wouldn't rate as a classic.
-Legend of Hell House– It's a decent watch. Don't know if I would call it a classic.

Definitely. I got a Leatherface mask for Halloween a couple of years ago and my wife wanted to watch it so she knew who he was. The dinner scene with the zooming in and out on her eyeball was just weird. And no foreboding music during a scene made it seem strange. The story was awesome, delivery not so much.

The Witch was a snoozer until the reveal.

I think Psycho has to do more with the competition in that genre at that time. It is considered the seminal slasher film and with Hitchcock it was well received before anyone saw it.

At the time, it affected shower curtain sales like nothing ever had before and he was excellent at showing you just enough and using black and white for the shower scene had this strange quality to it at the time.

I liken Psycho to Alien, until that came out, there was this opening just waiting to be filled by something we hadn't seen before. Then it had too many films following and imitating. I watched Psycho when I was 13 and there was nothing like it, no Jason, Michael or Freddy with the blood and gore.

But those slashers can't hold a candle to the guy in Wolf Creek for me. There is a scene in that film that stayed with me well beyond when I first watched it.

I think it's an easier film to like if you get past the surface stuff that goes on and pay attention to the little things. And the dialog is great. I don't think as much attention is paid to the conversations that don't include Linda Blair or Ellen Burstyn.

And I personally really enjoy the early 70's feel to the movie. I think the movie has aged well but it still has that early 70's feeling to it which is comfortable.
