Before that drive they had thrown it 28 times and run it 21. That's about as close as you get to being "balanced" in the modern NFL. I really hope our resident offensive "genius" watched that game
It's cute of you to try to toss out a long drive full of passing plays to prop up a flimsy point, but at the end of the day, the Rams threw 40 passes and ran the ball 23 times. Stafford took two sacks and had a 7-yard scramble on a called passing play. So that's actually 43 called passing plays versus only 22 called running plays. So if the Rams' Super Bowl performance is what you're passing off as the ideal level of balance, you're talking about a 2-to-1 Pass-to-run ratio in a game the Rams won by abandoning the run in the end.
But let's roll with your cheap attempt to rig the conversation by arbitrarily discarding a bunch of passes.
You wanted to magically stop time in order to freeze the stats at a point when the Rams had thrown 28 passes and run the ball 21 times. "That's as close as you can get to being balanced in the modern NFL," you said. That's a run percentage of 42%. So that's the ideal now. Cool, cool, cool, cool.
But here's the thing.
In 2021, Dallas ran 473 times while throwing 647 passes. You wanna pull out your calculator and do the math on that, bud? I'll save you the trouble. 42% runs.
Hmm. How about that? I guess you also think Dallas was "as close as you can get to being balanced in the modern NFL," right?
The same exact run percentage that you just swore was the ideal number in the modern NFL. And you had to cook the books to arrive at that percentage in the first place, because the truth is that the Rams called runs on only 33% of their plays.
The truth is the Rams did the thing you were railing against--abandoning the run--and they won precisely
because they abandoned the run (all those pesky passes you threw away by pausing the game when the pass-run ratio was 28-21 -- ignoring that the Rams were also losing the game at the point when you wanted to freeze time). This game doesn't prove your point. In fact it comes closer to proving the opposite of your agenda.
