It’s still way too early to declare this off-season successful or not. Not finished with FA and the draft hasn’t happened yet. But it is safe to say it’s been a fairly typical off-season for the Jones front office as we watch teams with a good front office run circles around the Cowboys with both vision and financial creativity.

  • A mental and physical toughness this team hasn’t shown in a very long time. Last January the niners told us in advance they were going to get physical with us and run the ball down our throats. Then they did just that. If this team is ever going to truly playoff relevant again, this must change
This is obviously and incomplete list. What else? What else must change?

Nope, won't happen. I've spent over 15 years in the military and seen commanders and organizations all over the world. Teams take on their leaders personality and thus it will always reflect Jerruh and Stephan, in other words, shiny, flaky, weak, all about style over substance. The only time we have changes is when a coach (Jimmy, Parcells) came in and were able to force a change without Jerruh getting involved and ruining it. Fat Mike is not going to make the change we need.

  • Finally- the bottom line for any Cowboys team right now- at least make a conference championship game. It’s embarrassing that this team can’t get past the divisional round of the playoffs. Until they do this is a giant gorilla on their backs.

You got that right. A 500 pound, king daddy silverback gorilla slapped the monkey off and climbed on many years ago.

Well there's some hard truth.

Also not an unacknowledged one, but a very underrated one.

Jerry needs to declare the HC to be in charge but the ego won't allow it......although he "would do anything to win."

But it is safe to say it’s been a fairly typical off-season for the Jones front office as we watch teams with a good front office run circles around the Cowboys with both vision and financial creativity.

Remember when people were saying the rams had “mortgaged their future” to win now? Rams GM Les Snead just smiles at people like Stephen Jones and says “hold my beer”.

But here’s my OP question- What must be different about this team next year in order for it take have success? Here’s my list:
  • A mental and physical toughness this team hasn’t shown in a very long time. Last January the niners told us in advance they were going to get physical with us and run the ball down our throats. Then they did just that. If this team is ever going to truly playoff relevant again, this must change.
  • Being able to run the ball consistently again. When this team has a running game, it opens everything else up. Either a better OL or better play calling must be part of this.
  • Better football IQ. Stop the stupid penalties, missed extra points, missed assignments, poor execution, etc. This team got dumber as the season progressed. One of these days maybe- just maybe we’ll have a HC who realizes small details matter. Practices matter. Attention to things like penalties and clock management matter.
  • Being willing to not play Zeke as much even though his contract is huge. Look, we get that he’s paid like a star. He’s not performing that way. Anyone who is honest will say that Tony Pollard was a consistently better RB last year and needs more touches. Pollard will never be a “bell cow”. But he needs more than 5-8 touches in a game.

  • Better creativity with the offense. At times it seems like as soon as Kellen Moore shows some creativity he gets a call from Jason Garrett to tap the creative brakes. I just don’t understand. Is it DCs have figured out what his style is and he has no answers? Kellen Moore has to be better or he should be gone.
  • For the first time in 15 years, make the playoffs two years in a row. For a franchise that once made the playoffs in 16 of 17 seasons back in the day, surely they could make it two years in a row for a change.
  • Finally- the bottom line for any Cowboys team right now- at least make a conference championship game. It’s embarrassing that this team can’t get past the divisional round of the playoffs. Until they do this is a giant gorilla on their backs.
This is obviously and incomplete list. What else? What else must change?

Define success?

If your talking contender status here is a short list:

-Oline needs to be a top 7 unit again, fix the line
-Defense needs to take the next step
-Moore needs to fix whatever nonsense he was doing the 2nd half of last year
-Zeke needs to be riding the bench and can no longer be featured.

Make the NFC title game

Anyone who requires that be done a certain way or thinks other things have to occur along with that in order to be considered a success has an agenda. Full stop.

Not to say I disagree with you but what would you do to change the Cowboys? I think we would not be much better if we kept Cooper, La’el and Gregory. Cooper was in the way of CeeDee, La’el and Gregory are walking off the field suspensions. They all needed to go.

I would actually bring in some quality free agents to try to make a team that was one of the worst in the playoffs into one that can contend. Don't have a problem letting Collins go, if the plan was to sign a quality starting LG since we don't have one right now. Don't have a problem letting Gregory go, if the plan was to pick up one of the other DEs that was available and that other teams thought were worthy of a quality offer or pick up a quality starting LB and move Parsons to DE/OLB full time. Don't have a problem with Cooper leaving, if the plan was to fortify the corps with a player who we know can be a quality starter if Gallup isn't ready at the beginning of the season.

Maybe we can get those replacements in the draft, but while we'll just be replacing what we lost through the draft, other teams that were already better than us are using both FA and the draft to actually improve.

I hear you but over paying for the Commanders guard and Von Miller would not be smart. Smith back injury is a concern. Maybe Stephen is not as stupid as we think. Pissing Gregory off was a blessing in disguise. The Cowboys need Dak, Tank, Parsons, CeeDee, and Diggs to make plays when it counts if that happens the Cowboys will be dangerous.

1.Have real NFL referees at practice and question them regarding latest trends on what is and isnt a penalty.
2.Regularly beat teams outside of the division and above .500 teams.
3.Establish an actual home field advantage by winning 75% of them.
4.Adjust run game philosophy or fire Philbin.
5.Make offensive adjustments so that the short passing game is an extension of the run game.
6.In conjunction with the above, get the ball out of Daks hand in under 3 seconds.
7.HC takes over the offense and/or playcalling if OC struggles.
8.HC sits a player for a play if committing a costly penalty.
9.HC is not to overcompensate risk taking over conservative 4th down special teams decisions.
10.Learn or Re Learn how to run an effective 4 and 2 minute offense.
11.Use the hurry up as a primary tool against specific defenses and looks.
12.Make more designed RPOS as a staple of the offense.
13.HC should instill discipline and accountability 24/7 and show tough love as needed.

14.Establish a winning standard consisting of demanding practices so that the team will become a play as you practice type team.

Didn't say to do either. There are moves that could have been made without overpaying. The team's strategy is to largely ignore those moves and try to get by with cheap ones to supplement re-signing its own players and drafting well. That has not proven to be a winning strategy.

We weren't good enough last year to beat San Fran in the playoffs with the players you mentioned. What makes you think we'll be good enough to do it this year?

Player development and good drafting. San Francisco barely beat us. With an improved offensive line we can beat them.

I'm glad you feel that way. But other teams that added good players in free agency are also hoping for good drafting. We have not made any progress this offseason with our moves. If anything, we have gone backward. That does not usually bode well.

Yeah other teams in the AFC specifically will be better. If healthy should win the East. Do you trust Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. San Francisco, Tampa, Rams, and Packers will be there so it is gonna be tough.

The offensive line did not protect "just fine" and thinking the run game is "the least of our worries" makes me wonder what team you were watching last season.

That the front office has done little to address either makes me wonder what team they were watching, too. Then again, ol' Jerry made his Super Bowl proclamation the same week more people were picking the Cowboys to lose at home than any other team. Those people were right and Jerry just looked like a self-deluded old fool.

Air Dak is not a winning strategy against good teams. If that's the route people want to go, especially the Jones boys, then prepare for disappointment.[/QUOTEA
We were in the top 5-8 according to most statistical measures in regards to pass protection for DAK ???????????????? Did not protect him? What the he** are you talking about?! Running game, go look at the last so many superbowls, 25 yards rushing by the Rams! even Nick F. Threw for 4 TD I believe a few years ago?

Washington may have upgraded its quarterback situation by trading for Wentz. How much is hard to say.

The Eagles have three first-round draft picks and added a better pass rusher than we did in Hassan Reddick. The Kyzir White and Zach Pascal moves also are an improvement.

The Giants have been about like we have and haven't fixed their biggest issue since Daniel Jones is still quarterback.

There are reasons why there is not usually a repeat winner in the NFC East, so I'm not getting my expectations up, especially since we got worse the second half of the season instead of better. The Eagles didn't finish far behind us, actually used free agency to at least improve slightly and have multiple first-round picks.

This must change. Sadly, we both know that's not going to happen.

I see folks here already penciling in the division title in 2022. I'll believe it if I see it because, like everything else with the Jones boys, history is against them.
Love this picture of that buffoon.
