I think Penning is their trade up target

During the Senior Bowl week heard the Cowboys were extremely high on Penning. He fits the type of player they want to target this offseason. He would bring an attitude and a physical presence this team sorely lacks.
Yuck.

He is raw. He got worked over by day 3 DEs at the Senior Bowls 1-on-1 drills.

If they're going to draft a guy that is raw and questionable to start as a rookie, then draft Tyler Smith.

Penning's athletic measurables look really good, but in game footage he does not show the same level of athleticism as Tyler Smith.

The other issues is that Smith can play OG until Tyron retires. If Tyron/Steele are healthy in 2022, then Penning won't play because is not an OG option, IMO.

If they trade up, I think it will be for:
  • Edge Rusher
    • This is the most likely position if they trade up.
    • There are 4 edge rushers that are clearly in a tier above the 5th guy.
    • One of the 4 could definitely fall to mid-teens.
  • WR
    • With Gallup's injury and the cost of WRs I can see them wanting a WR.
    • The issue is that I don't see one that I would trade up to get.
    • Jameson Williams is the best WR in this draft, IMO; however, he also won't be available to start the season.
  • OT
    • The top 3 are clearly on a tier above Penning.
    • As I've said previously, I probably wouldn't draft Penning over Tyler Smith.
    • Watch those Senior Bowl drills.

I like Travis Jones more, but wouldn't complain if they finally filled this weak area.
@Stash
I would take Travis Jones straight-up over Jordan Davis.

Davis will flash with some Wow plays and wow games, maybe even a wow season at some point, but he was lazy in college.
- That's exact definition of Dontari Poe.
- Poe was 5 pounds heavier at the combine and also ran a sub 5.0 forty.
- Poe had 1 great year in the NFL, but most years only flashed here and there.
- He had a tendency to come to camp way over-weight which contributed to his injury issues.
- In 2020 with the Cowboys, he was good for the 1st play that he was on the field and then he just started leaning on OL until the play was over.

Travis Jones was the most dominant Lineman in the Senior Bowl 1-on-1 drills.
- Zion was the only OL that slowed him down and at one point Jones tossed Zion to the ground.

Slater is the one person I believe

She is saying if they trade up, looking at London, Cross, and Penning. Eyeing Zion and Burks closer to 24. May have to move up for ZJ.

My thought: all this talk about Tyler Smith is fallback in case team stays put and all of the above are gone

The Poe comparison is scary. The guy was a bum when he signed here and couldn’t care less about playing. He conned the Joneses into paying him to do nothing. And then he quietly exited the league, never to be heard from again.

I'm on record wanting Jones at 24 or landing him on a trade back. One of my favorite prospects in this year's class.

I think they want to find Tyron's replacement now and have him start inside. We know Tyler can do this, but think Penning is probably more of a right tackle.

Penning reminds me of Doug Free.

I think if Dallas trades up, it will be for a DE or possibly Cross or London.
I think JDavis will not make it past 14 (Ravens) or 15 &18 (Eagles) and if Dallas does try to trade up, it will need to be to 13 (Texans) at least if they want him.
I think ZJohnson goes before 24.

I actually doubt Dallas trades up because the few guys I could see them target, I think go way higher than they want to give up picks for.

Really? Besides throwing that guy to the ground after the whistle he was beat at the senior bowl multiple times along with future Hall of Famer Zion Jones. Zion was beaten much worse but that's another conversation. I wouldn't draft either guy at 24 more less trade up. I'd rather sit home and take Travis Jones or Tyler Smith. Trade up has to be Cross, Davis, Thibeadeax or London

There's no need to trade UP for an OL. You're not necessarily looking for a left tackle.

The only reason to go up at all is for a pass rusher.

There will be some surprises in the top 23 that will push someone down....but my gut still says Green at 24, then Jerry with that grin as if that was the plan and hope all along.

I still love Nakobe Dean and would love to see him in this defense with Parsons, but that's not gonna happen because of the blown Williams and McGovern picks.

If Jones is there at #56, I'm pulling the trigger regardless of who's on the board. Dude is going to be a good player in this league for a long time and it'd be great to not have DT by committee all the time.

I think this is exactly what they're thinking. Deep T draft. Get your future LT at a low price, and give him a year to contribute and be under Tyron's wing.

It's one of the most important positions, so I get it. But you can get too cute with that level of planning (see: McGovern). Would rather focus in taking the best player, not the player who fits our vision for the cap
