Alexander Wright ran a 4.1 forty.
- He had no lateral agility and hands of stone, but in a straight line he was incredibly fast.

Teddy Williams in college beat Bob Hayes 100m best official 100 meter time.

Having said that, I don't think any football player in history could beat Deion in a footrace; although, Bo would be very close.

I still remember a game against the Raiders when they tried to go deep on Deion.
- The Raiders had Olympic Gold Metal winner James Jett at WR.
- Deion was faster than Jett by a wide margin.
- Deion after the game expressed that he felt disrespected that the Raiders would even try going deep on him.

If we're gonna go Alexander Wright,.. how far behind is another straight-liner ... Cowboys WR Randall Williams ?

According to NFL films the three fastest players in NFL history were Bob Hayes, Darrell Green and Bo Jackson. Green and Jackson had 40 times under 4.2. Not sure any NFL player was faster in pads than Darrell Green. He chased down Tony Dorsett, Eric Dickerson and Herschel Walker. Dickerson and Walker had 40 times of 4.24 and 4.25. Tony Dorsett claimed he never ran under 4.3.

I've seen Darrell Green flat out jet- fetched both Dorsett and Dickerson from behind, but i haven't see his one vs Hershel Walker.

i don't ever recall Dickerson being officially recorded as a 4.2 guy coming into the NFL in 1983.
He was a state champ in 100 meters at track n field in high school.
But from what i've read or heard him he's never been officially being timed as that 40 time fast, heading into the NFL.

Tough but here are my three......
  • Bob Hayes
  • Deion Sanders
  • Darrell Green

There is a reason they called him "BULLET" Bob Hayes. He is number one and the only one to be declared the world's fastest human with 2 Olympic Gold medals to prove it (100 and 4x100).

Bo Jackson, there was nothing like him on earth and scouts said he had 4.12-4.13 40 yard times.

Deion Sanders was said to have legit 4.2 and Darrell Green was as speed demon. However, longevity goes to Green and proof of track speed goes to Green. Green does have a verifiable and official time of 10.08 in the 100 meters. You had to be fast to stay in the NFL for 20 years at CB.

It’s been reported that Eric Dickerson ran a 4.24 40. I remember Darrell Green chasing down Herschel Walker at a game at Texas Stadium. They might want to add Adam Vinatieri to the list. He chased down Herschel Walker in 1997 but Walker had lost at least a couple of steps by then.

If's its not official, i dunno how reputable that report is.
I saw Green fetch TD and E, way before there was even YouTubes.
and can re-visit those fetches again.

If you Google Eric Dickerson’s 40 yard dash time it comes up 4.27.

I get that sometimes pure speed...plays a factor. Both O and D.

But I will take a baller any day. Remember when people made fun of Dallas for taking Emmitt?

Looking closer someone is posting 4.27 form in 2010.
That's 27 years since he was drafted per 1983
And his last season in the nfl was 1993.

And we know he didn't run in the official 2010 nfl combine waay after hes been long retired.

yeh for all we know his personal publicist could've been giving those 40 time numbers.

Regardless Eric Dickerson was fast. He broke a number of long TD runs and I only remember Darrell Green running him down. Some players in pads don’t play as fast as their 40 times.

None of those reports are truly reputable.
All hearsay unless officially timed at the combine or an official, unbiased event.
All kinds of "supposed" 40 times that an insane.

As for Green, all we know is that in pads, he sure as heck was faster than TD!

yeh we surely know he was fast - he was SMU Pony Express fast,.. and he was an explosive dynamo and absolutely the smoothest, most graceful
upright tall runner i've ever seen.
