Timing the vet WR acquisition

Now that they've had a good look, do you think they will add a vet WR before the trip to Denver, or wait until camp resumes at the Star?

The problem with adding a WR late is that they probably won’t be ready to help us much in the first few games, which is when we’d need help until Gallup and Washington get back. If we wait until after the second or even third preseason game, can they get up to speed (learn the offense) in time to contribute in the first few games? Doubtful but possible.

It's an interesting situation because when the calendar turns to October the Cowboys should have Gallup and Washington back so they're figuring out if it's worth it adding a veteran.

I would say we're in a better spot vs the start of 2018 season with a rookie Gallup, Beasley, Austin, Butler, and Brown. For now it's OK to let the young guys get some snaps and see what they can offer for atleast one preseason game.

So using that line of thinking we should never bring in any free agent. What did we just bring in Barr for? Why bring in a swing tackle, let's wait until they prove they can't do the job. Why did we bring in all 3 of Kearse and Hooker and Kazee last year? Why didn't we wait until we saw how everyone else at safety did or to PROVE they couldn't get it done? The idea is to whenever possible make sure guys prove they can in fact get it done and to minimize question marks. It's to construct a roster that puts you in the best position to win and to be as certain as possible (because you can never be certain) that you won't have a problem or weakness. When you have a potential weakness you sure it up as best you can whether that be via draft or free agency and the earlier you do it the more options are available to you and the more time for those players to learn the system. We brought in Washington in part because we knew we had a weakness. Was he the right guy? Maybe, maybe not, but he is also hurt now so even that vet minimum attempt to help sure up the position is of no value for week 1.

I honestly believe that this team has a very capable cast of youngsters at WR to get the job done.

I'd also like to see some who would, most likely, be far more inclined to stay with the team longer.

We all form OPINIONS, based on what we see and hear. My OPINION? You SOUND like someone who considers themselves more competent than those immersed in it for a living, and the implication is that the Cowboys won’t succeed. Knowing it’s pointless kinda takes away from the enjoyment, doesn’t it?

I do like that you don't have to actually read what someone writes, but can instead decide what they are actually thinking based on a post on the internet. It must make you think you are right quite often to take a statement and twist it into whatever you think best supports your view point. If you can't differentiate between a comment about what puts us in a better position to win versus having no chance to win or being pointless you need help with your reading comprehension

I think we have several good weapons in the passing game arsenal—Lamb, Shultz, Pollard, Elliott. We need what, 2 or 3 more to be deadly? To me, the question is, how many can we get from this group?

Deadly??? We need a couple to step up from that group just to have a slightly below NFL average receiving corps. If you are down late in a game you aren't playing both Zeke and Pollard. So your listed group has Lamb, a TE and a RB on the field. If the OL is struggling (which is also a concern right now with a rookie, Biadasz, a hopefully improving Steele and hopefully healthy T Smith) Zeke is in and in pass protection. Teams are doubling Lamb in that situation and assuming they cover your whole listed "group" one on one.
So what if they don't step up? That is the problem and why you build a roster to minimize that potential. Or what if Lamb gets hurt? The goal is to protect yourself from the negative "what if" scenarios wherever possible, not to pray all goes well unless you have no other choice.

Viable, of course, but many people have started paying more attention to potential studs already on the roster. Could we find someone to plug in that would benefit us more than what we already have on the roster? Until they bring someone else in, should we assume they like the potential of the guys we already have? Since we’re all just speculators here, is it possible, despite a 27 year Super Bowl drought, that they MIGHT have better judgement? Just sayin’, no malice. Hell, I argue with brother. Quite often!

I think Tolbert is gonna be fine
I think we run more two TE sets early in the year and use Turpin in the slot as well as using pollard some in the passing game
I think worst case we are thin the first 4 games but I think WR by committee could be effective if the oline plays solid
I’m more concerned about the swing tackle position
If we can run the ball and protect Dak the passing game will be fine

There ARE no guarantees, and like Parcells used to say “Can’t have steak on every plate”.

I would put this more on KM and MM to scheme success out of what we have, and why not? Is the gap that great between our young collective and Gallup/Washington? Is there someone out there we could plug in for the first 5 or 6 games who would be a major upgrade from any of our young guys?
