This should surprise no one........BTW he's in the final year of his rookie deal @ $9.7M. But either way, nearly zero chance of this happening.

Jerry Jones is never afraid to make a big splash, so we can never count the Cowboys out when a player of Smith's caliber goes on the block. Leighton Vander Esch re-signed with Dallas this offseason on a one-year, $2 million deal, so they aren't committed to the former first-round pick long-term despite him currently sitting atop the depth chart at the middle linebacker spot. Vander Esch has also had durability problems throughout his career, so this is very much an area the Cowboys could look to improve upon as they head into a 2022 campaign where expectations are sky high.

It’s getting comical….any time XXX player wants a trade or XXX fa is on the market and wants to increase their perceived value the cowboys are “linked” either through a media source or a random report.

Then 99 times out of 100 we do not trade for or sign said player.

BOTTOM LINE - it’s 100% click bait

Cracks me up that a lot of people still fall for it and have hope we’re going to sign or trade for someone

This is easy to answer: NO

There is no way the Cowboys are going to trade for arguably the best statistical middle LB in the NFL today, knowing full well Roquan Smith is up to receive most likely the highest LB paid contract in the league.

Compare LVE's & Roquan's stats...

20220810-041602.jpg

LVE is still a very good middle LB who has recovered from neck injury, stepped it up and played very well towards the later half of last season even though he was only used part-time, and LVE is bigger, taller, heavier and fast enough (4.65 40 yd dash) to play middle LB for the Cowboys for years to come. Plus, it would be way cheaper to keep LVE if he stays healthy and does well in 2022.

hope not

if u trade away pick…high pick at that and then u also have to give a market setting contract u can not do it for a non premium positon or u will regret it 99.99999%!

no ilb, no safety, no running back, no iol, stuff like that

qb, wr, ot, edge, cb, maybe dt….that is ok

The salary cap makes this even less possible. No way if happens.

They can easily fit him under the cap. He'd be a big cap hit in 2024. Diggs in 2025, Lamb in 2026, if they sign all of them. By 2026 Tyron, Tank, and Zeke will be long gone. It's a matter of staggering contracts and different players being paid. But I would bet my house that the Jones boys aren't even considering it.

Would be incredible but Stephan is to worried about his money flow to make a trade he will have to pay big money for next year.

The problem that is obvious is the new contract. A team probably isn’t going to want to give up a premium pick and pay him at a non-premium position. If he was a QB, LT, #1 WR, DE or CB it would be a more interesting conversation.

At some point you are going to start to see players like this hit free agency without compensation, or a later round pick. The wild card on this one is a team may want to “gamble” on a player like this just prior to a new league year when the cap is expected to rise significantly.

I think the LB group is actually shaping into one of the strongest units on the ball club. Parsons, Cox this season and the future, Damone Clark for the future, LVE for this season and depth, Barr for this season and depth...I like this unit.

Reporters love to add the Cowboys to every free agent story except QB it seems.
