Off-season amphetamine use would be considered substance abuse, but if used in-season, it would still be a PED. Scandrick and Welker tested positive in the Spring so they would fall under the first time substance abuse policy and not be subject to a suspension.

That is not correct.

There is no testing in the off-season (at least until the end of April) for substance use. So it wouldn't be considered anything because players are free to get high for several months during the off season - I do agree that both are likely, as part of a settlement, going in Stage 1 though

Scandrick and Welker tested positive in late April/early May. That is the off-season.

right now still expecting him to serve the 4 weeks (3 weeks now) but would be thrilled if it is lifted and he gets back on the field.

That isn't when testing begins though. Testing for drugs of abuse starts 4/20 every year (yes, it really is 4-20, I'm not making that up)

not sure I follow you..

March 11 2014: League year starts
April 20, 2014: drug testing begins
sometime in late August 2014 : Scandrick is suspended 4 games for molly

according to that timeline in conunjction with Rappaport's tweet "Every 2014 league year suspension will be reviewed", Scandrick is eligible to have his suspension reviewed

As long as he's back for the Saints game. Need him more against Brees, than Locker or whoever will be the Rams QB at the time.
Not that Locker couldn't hurt us, and even the Rams QB too, as we don't have success against back up QB's. But still, hope for the Saints game.

2014 league year started on March 11

They aren't playing games, hence the 'offseason'. Amphetamines taken in April will not improve your perfromance in September, that is why they will be classified as substance abuse and not PEDs.

ok, my apologies, i think you and I are having 2 completely different conversations here.. I was just making the point that according to the chronological order of everything that Scandrick would be eligible to have his case reviewed, not the fundamental difference between the classification of the substance(s) involved

Cool, just pointing out that Scandrick and Welker were taking recreational drugs like Molly/Xtasy that may contain amphetamines. The distinction between recreational and performance enhancing is what the NFL is trying to clear up, as well as adding HGH testing to the program.

Mort just was asked about the probability of this happening (these players being reinstated) and replied 100%. Just not sure if this week or next, probably too late for this week since they won't vote till tonight.

It is all over PFT and most other sites. The league presented a proposal for the NFLPA to vote on, but they have a few issues and have not voted on it yet. It could happen at any time according to most reports.

No, they fight to protect rights...and that benefits all players.

Like the right to smoke a little more pot or use amphetamines? Like it or not, these guys are role models to millions of kids and should be held to a higher standard, not less.

These kids should be looking to their parents for role models, and the ones who can't, need someone else. I get the idea atheletes need to be role models too, but there is a fine line too. They need their privacy also.
Heck, most kids with parents, and from middle class homes or above, those parents probably smoke pot too. So you can't always tell them to look up to athletes on how to live their lives.
