Lets say we don't get a good DT in the draft or if we do, he needs a year to get accustomed to the NFL. I have been thinking about our D line and keep thinking Hardy, even though he's really good, is going to need help along the line or he's just going to be the focus of the O line on every play. I know everyone on here is already aware of this but my question surrounds Josh Brent and his ability. I mean, is he better than Rat or just a guy? I always considered him a good player with a lot of potential. Just curious what your thoughts are on Brent and his ability........

I just rewatched the playoff games and he was still knocking off rust. His strength is undoubtedly is still there. He would pick up the GB center on his bull rush and put him on skates and drop him off in Rodgers lap while engaged. His feet are still good running down the line on sweeps and the like.

His issues were with playing in a gap and recognizing double teams. He wasn't like Hayden in getting washed out but he would get turned before he could sit down and give up a crease. Needs to polish his technique in shedding blocks. He used to two gap straight up front and now he is often on the shoulder, stuff like that.

No he wasn't as good a Rat. We may never have a DT as good as Ratliff in his prime. When Brent was playing for us he was better than JAG but not elite, obviously better than anyone we have on our Dline except Craword. That is why JJ is keeping him around because he know he can play.

I just mentioned Rat cause I know he was really good and when Brent went in for him a couple years back he played pretty good...

I'm sure Brent will come around this season. I curious to see how our 2014 draft such as Gardner, Bishop and Coleman will respond. If those guys can come in improve we are set.

golden cock is better than Brent..

Maybe last season due to Brent not playing football in nearly 2 years. But Brent under normal circumstances has shown to be a better player than Hayden. The question is does Brent regain his pre-jail form in 2015?

I'm thinking Brent has received enough love stripping the Eagle of the ball a couple years ago.

Not as close to as good as Ratliff was. He's a big body who is hard to move, but not much more than that.

I think if Terrell McClain is healthy, he showed more ability to cause havoc in a few games than we've ever seen from Brent. If we can figure out one other solid rotation guy to pair with McClain and Crawford, we'll be in decent shape. We've got a lot of candidates, but no sure things among them.Ultimately, that leaves Hayden as the fallback.

I think Brent is the holding card of the Cowboys playing deck in the DL.

Like with Spencer..Brent needs time to healup and get into football shape.

I think letting Spencer go was about keeping Brent..most definitely.

But Dallas isn't going to publicize it because of all the negative pub they would get.

We'll be fine.

I have no doubt they are going to draft defense on every round to help Marrinelli get some live bodies on defense.

The offense is busting at the seams with talent.

Josh Brent. Drafted in 2010. Entering what would be year 6 of his NFL career. Evidently still filled with incredible untapped potential...

His career obviously haven't followed a traditional course, with the jail time and all.

When he had that accident he was just then coming into his own, and two years of being out of football was a major setback.

If he can regain his pre-jail form, he'll be more than good enough to be the lead dog in our 1-tech rotation.

I honestly wouldn't feel that bad if we went into next year with Brent, McClain, and Bishop as our 1 tech's. In a perfect world (when we are winning) we are talking about these 3 playing a combined 25-30 snaps. A great 3 down 1 tech would be great to have but those guys are few and far between.

Rat was not all that. La Roi Glover was better. And we can go back through Cowboy History to find DTs a lot better

Manster
Lilly

and a few others.

Brent is just big and strong and that is about it.

Josh coming back in combat shape would be a 40% upgrade.. He might be big and strong but if his cardio is still suspect, he will only be a factor on rotations.. Ratliff in his prime was a beast and in this scheme he would tell you it's the same thing... I still want a young bull to come in here and push these big fellas...
