Because he's the DC, and they've always had a top 10 scoring defense. Your point is valid, but the real question is: can he be any worse than Jason Garrett?

The answer is NO.

Well when you put it like that........... LOL.

JJ will never let Garrett go. JJ had Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells. He let them go. They knew how to win and knew how to motivate the professional player. They did have some hiccups, but they got it done. You will never see a Gruden, Harbaugh, or any type of coach like that who has a little fire to them. Garrett will be coaching the Cowboys as long as he wants to. Linehan on third and two calls for a run left behind Bell and Cooper, it was stuffed for no gain. It was at a crucial time in the game. Marinelli's bend don't break defense doesn't work with NFL quarterbacks who have protection and accuracy. I hope it gets better, but injuries also hurt this team worse than they hurt other teams. Coaches need to make adjustments. Go Cowboys!

A look around the league at the interesting names for potential head coaching replacements. More under the radar types and not the big obvious names like a Harbaugh, etc.

1) Edgar Bennett - GB OC. Downside, he's never called plays before, McCarthy does that. Then again, Doug Pederson never really called plays in KC and he's doing a god job in Philly. Bennett started as a player personnel guy so he has a scouting background. Also, under McCarthy, he likes to cross train his offensive coaches, so Bennett was worked with WRs, RBs, QBs, etc. Another downside, however - the McCarthy coaching tree is barren.

2) Harold Goodwin - Arizona OC. Like Bennett, the downside is he doesn't really call plays, Ariens does. But he does have an extensive resume - OL coach in college, OL coach in Pittsburgh (when they won their SB in 2009), OC in Arizona. He's said to be a key factor in Arizona's complex passing game. Some will say Arizona's offense is garbage but I think that's more because of just bad QBs.

3) Kris Richard - Seattle DC. A young guy, only 38. He doesn't have an illustrious resume but he's been a key assistant in Seattle's defense for years. Was the secondary coach before being named DC.

4) Bob Cooter - Lions OC. This guy is young, like Sean McVeigh young. But pretty wide respected in the league. Pretty innovative offensive coach. And even in better, given all our problems with players who have had trouble with the law, Cooter was arrested in 2009 for aggravated burglary when he got drunk and climbed into a bed with a woman after he broke into her apartment. LOL. Also has a DUI from 2006.

Some will come back with McDaniels and Patricia. Not buying the hype. Belicheck's tree is woeful and when you look at McDaniels I am scared he looks so good because he's got the greatest QB of all time playing for him (like how Romo made Garrett look competent type effect). And with Patricia, how much of their defensive success is really because Belicheck is there?

Bennett is intriguing to me given his player personnel background. Goodwin's exposure to Ariens' complex offense is also intriguing.
Im not really concerned with HC's that don't have play calling. That typically falls on the OC and if they get a strong OC it shouldn't be an issue

If we hire someone named Cooter as head coach, we better have been kicked out of the NFL and joined the SEC. Just no.

No.

Some NFL assistant coaches I like...
Keith Butler, Steelers DC
Winston Moss, Packers Assoc. HC/LBs
Joe DeCamillis, Jaguars SpTeams (yeah, I know)
Jerry Gray, Vikings DBs
Steve Spagnolu, Giants DC - His stint as Rams HC was poor but there's only so much you can do when Kyle Boller is your QB and your best WR is Danny Amendola. If there's a Pete Carroll among the retreads, he'd be my bet.
Dan Campbell, Saints Asst. HC/TEs

I like Ken Norton Jr too. He's doing well as Oakland's DC but I don't think this is a good spot for him. I think there would be unrealistic expectations and history, as well as Jerry issues. Dan Campbell might be in this situation too but his time here was less meaningful.

Honestly, there are A LOT of coaches in the NFL who were players just a couple years ago. Didn't used to be like that. Maybe that's good from a diversity standpoint but not a deep pool for experienced prospective head coaches. The NFL is just tearing through coaches.

As for college coaches...
Jim Harbaugh, Michigan
Paul Chryst, Wisconsin
Chris Petersen, Washington
David Shaw, Stanford
Dan Mullen, Mississippi St
James Franklin, Penn St

Harbaugh is my fave but I don't think he and Jerry would get along so he would be canned similar to what happened in San Fran.

Cooter...now that is a back woods name that puts a smile on my face.

Hmmm...
Maybe we'd win a SB before then.

Mike Shula is a guy I'd look at. He built a dynamic running game in Carolina around both his backs and a mobile QB. What he did with Cam Newton is absolutely amazing considering how poor his mechanics were coming into the league and now the guy is a great down field passer. Since Rivera is a defensive coach Shula has had the O all on his own and it's never been a squad with a lot of talent on it. I think he'd be a great coach for Dak, and I really like his play calling in games. Carolina is an entertaining team to watch. I'd also welcome him to bring along defensive line coach Eric Washington as a defensive coordinator.
