OLP: T. Smith, top 3 LT of all time

I can see the argument.

Tyron Smith is an unreal combination of size and athleticism and his technique is arguably second to none.

But in reality, there are guys who have done a better job or have been more awe inspiring... or both (see 6’9” Jonathan Ogden).

And there are guys who have more accomplished careers; even at this relatively early stage in Tyron’s.

Fact is, Tyron has never even been the consensus best LT in the league in his own era.

I have certainly considered him the best, but Williams, Peters, and Joe Thomas all had an argument at any point in Tyron’s career.

I would add Orlando Pace.

I think "All Time" discussions can only be done when their careers are over.

If Tyron can somehow get over his injuries (unlikely I know) and play another 3 years or so at an elite level =, he will be right there with these other guys.

Pace. Some other guys.

Yep. 3 more year All Pro years ought to do it. 1st or 2nd team, not alternate. But I think it's unlikely too.

I think Tyron Smith had moments where he looked bad because our team gave up around 50 sacks.
He looks bad (not great) because of how he looks. 2017 year the back clearly hampered him. This year he looked stiff. A little limited, but not so hampered. More like a lineman without the athleticism he used to have. Which is most linemen.

This is a pretty well respected site / Twitter. Found this postworthy given all of the Tyron hate of late.

They should include all OTs.

Erik Williams played RT, but his years prior to the car wreck were the greatest by an OT and it's not even close, IMO.

He made Reggie White cry.

He is the only OLineman that I've ever seen "take over a game" in the way that QBs and other skill position players have done.

Larry Allen bullied defensive players because it was fun but Erik Williams literally wanted to kill defensive players.

Smith looks mortal when he's not 100% and some people over rotate. Every OT in the league gets beat. Tyron gets beat less than almost all of them and we should be thrilled with that.

No idea where he stacks up all time and don't really care.

Any update on his back? I heard talk of finally...maybe...getting surgery?

Williams was never at Smith, Thomas, and Peters level. Williams was never a first team all pro, only had 2 second team all pros.

Peters is 37 and has had two first team all-pro selections which came in 2011 and 2013. Smith's biggest rival was Joe Thomas, who was a generational player at tackle.

Ogden, Munoz, Roaf, Jones.

Tyron hasn't been the same guy at least the last couple of years, and likely never will again.

As a prospect he compares with the tops of all time, but his period of dominance is too short to even be talking top 5. If he had stayed healthy, he'd be in the conversation.

It's possible the back heals up enough. Even with the neck issues this year, the back did seem better. But as of now, no.

Give it a few years and I think we'll be talking about Joe Thomas in that same kind of stratosphere too.

If you really look, you probably find 10 guys before Tyron without breaking a sweat. Joe Thomas is definitely one of them.

It's ok not to be one of the best of all time.

Before his injury, Williams was easily one of the two best tacles I’ve watched over the last 40 years. Anthony Munoz was the other.

There’s no NFL team - not the Raiders or Rams or Steelers or Commanders or anyone else - that could put together an all-time franchise offensive line like the one above.

This! before the accident the big E was the best just ask John Madden, he use to rave about him all the time as the best in the game.

Yet, we currently have 3 of those starters simultaneously on our roster... hopefully Tyron's back heals up and Fred returns at full strength next year.

Voicing concern, doubt, criticism equates to “hate” in today’s society.
I did not mean hate in the literal sense.

I was referring to those few that think an LT is one of our top needs. Sure, Tyron didn't have his best season, but the dude just turned 28 and if health permits could have another 5-7 years in him.

I’m not convinced he’s been better than Flozell so this seems to be a reach. Flo had his issues with penalties but he was also deaf in one ear.

I would not trade 1 member of the current O-lone with any member of the early 90's O-line. The early 90's O-line was special and nasty...just downright mean and nasty. Kevin Gogan got kicked out of the pro-bowl, that's nasty.

Tyrone is great player...
