18 regular season games, 2 preseason games.

The players clearly are doing to have some big demands so the owners are already setting the bar high for what they want.

I don't think 2 extra games is all that big of a deal. Injuries happen. So they happen in game 3 of a preseason game or in game 14 of the regular season.
I kind of like the extra 2 games meaning something.

Maybe some team is so far out in front, they rest their players the last 2 games. Or some team gets hot, and needs one more win to make the playoffs, and will have 2 games to do it, otherwise they miss out. This will get fans more excited.

With all the new rules about player safety. Maybe that what is hurting players more than just allowing them to be play. As they try so hard not get a penalty they get hurt instead.

Just a different viewpoint. And the team is not making anymore money from 18 games and 2 PS, or 16 games and 4 PS. The ticket prices are the same. And are prepaid mostly by season ticket holders. They miss out from some concession sales. It is for the advertisement money mostly.

And if they start the season a week earlier, and it runs a week later. And if they add another bye week as well. That is 3 weeks less of an already too long off-season. :D

I am not in favor of an 18 game schedule. I didn't really like 16, just too hard on the players IMO. I'd rather see a 14 game schedule but I'm probably in the minority there.

These kids can’t play a 16 game season without being hurt for 8 of them

Why push for 18 games....oh right

“Gimmiemoneygimmiemoneygimmiemoneygimmoemoney”

Plus who wants a team to finish 10-8 or 11-7

I think this keeps coming up because the owners know the players are against it.

This way it looks like they are giving them something when they take it off the table. It is all gamesmanship.

would the players trade 2 extra games for no "hooch" testing?

If they want 18 games they need to cut the PS by 2 games, add another Bye Week and about 15 players to the game day roster
EXACTLY!! except i would say that the season should be lengthened by more than 1 bye week to allow more rest & healing.and lessen the importance of the the first game or two. maybe make them the last of the tie breakers.

The payoff for the league is that they could get 12.5% more money from the nets for real games vs pretend ones. Would that jack the cap to cover the players?

If the owners are interested in this, it is safe to assume they've already run this up the TV flagpole and got some salutes, they are not moving forward with this if it doesn't mean more money in their pockets.

I am pretty ambivalent to it because I get enough football and prefer the college season kicks off Labor Day weekend and the NFL the following weekend. The TV nets would not prefer what you outlined with a week added before and after, they would want both weeks after and the additional bye and that takes the season through two ratings sweeps, November and February.

I wonder how it would affect playoff competitiveness. The Cowboys are usually a strong second half of the season team so we might make the playoffs more often if we got two additional games. And teams starting 0-9 might still have a chance late into the season.

Foolish for the players great for the owners. These guys are already breaking down in many ways. Add even more games to it will create more injuries, blows to the head, etc. I feel like the NFL will oversaturate. They have with me already but I know I'm in the minority.
The NFL owners’ push for an 18 game schedule makes clear three things about their priorities:

1. They don’t give a rat’s behind about player safety. All their “safety talk” is garbage.
2. They apparently have no wise man among them who can remind them that sometimes less is more.
3. Greed is their guiding light.

The owners have absolutely owned the players in the last few CBA's.

Players desperately wanted free agency, owners said okay, we're just going to insist on this little thing called a "salary cap". They also demanded the franchise tag. Players were celebrating their ability to sign wherever they wanted, but the owners really installed a way to control spending and limit the movement of elite players.

Next up, the concussion issue. The owners insisted on a bigger piece of the pie and in return, would "help" the players out by limiting the amount of contact in practices. It literally cost the owners nothing to reduce contact practices and the players sacrificed revenue to get it.

This time, owners want more games (more revenue) and will offer up elimination of marijuana testing, which again will cost the owners nothing.

The baseball and basketball players associations have way more power than football players.

Bullet, you only needed #3. To them, the word "enough" doesn't exist.

I'm very conscious of the concussion issue. In fact, I think for the long-term health of football we should consider no tackle football until high school age. I'm also a big believer in limiting full contact practices. I do think more time should be dedicated to proper tackling techniques. We (coaches and fans) complain that less contact leads to poor tackling in games, which I get, but there just needs to be added focus and dedicated time to drill safe tackling.

However, I have no issue with the 18-game proposal. As long as they eliminate 2 preseason games AND add more players to both the roster and gamely active roster. Preseason games are not very valuable to me, and 3 of the 4 games are typically players who will not make the regular season roster.

Considering the small number of players nailed for pot, do you think that's a bargaining chip for the others? Not saying they don't smoke, they're just smart enough to avoid getting caught.

I think what you say is accurate but I think the players, rank and file, are aware they got screwed without a kiss last time and might have more involvement than just their union rep this time. But they realize the problem, there's not one owner, the least of which with 1.3B in net worth, that can't weather the storm much better than the bottom 50% on the pay scale.

If this was back in the day, the players would be better equipped because they had to have part time summer jobs which they could have turned into full time but these players today, they don't know anything but football. They don't know how to live like the rest of us.

And the owners know this, what's Booger gonna do, hire Dak to be his pool boy during the lockout or strike?

Not sure this will fly with players and frankly I don't blame them. Why should they agree to two additional games when they can get paid the same money for 16 games. Concessions on the marijuana policy won't cut it either coz I'm sure players with say hell I don't smoke so why should agree to that. Just me, but the only way I see players agreeing this is new money from an additional percentage of revenues.

Report: NFL could push for 18-game schedule in labor talks
Posted by Charean Williams on May 29, 2019, 6:54 PM EDT
The NFL could seek an 18-game regular season or an expanded playoff field in a new labor deal, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports. In return, Maske says, many owners are willing to offer players concessions to the commissioner’s disciplinary authority and to the marijuana policy.

Maske quoted a high-ranking official with one NFL team saying “some owners . . . would like to expand the season” to 18 games but added it’s not clear “if there is much support from the players on that.”

The league will push the issue but there are 2 possible motivations:
1. They really want 18 games.
2. It's a bargaining chip so to speak in that they'll give in not to do it if the players give in on something else.
