He should have been cut already IMO. He wasn't all that good last year and is coming off a major injury. With Cobb in the fold, Hurns was expendable IMO.

Yup, you have Gallup, Cooper, Cobb, and then some young guys who will be tough to get rid of. Plus Austin. And a possibility they only keep 5 not 6. I'm sure Hurns will be here for camp, but depth is good and young. After that injury I think they should moved on.

Hurns is a great guy, and a steady WR. A recovery from the injury last year would be a feel good story, but the reality needs to be if he isn't one of the top guys he needs to be cut. This will test the whole loyalty thing Jerry tends to over-do... loyal to the TEAM by doing what is right to make the team better or being loyal to the player.

Austin is still in more danger than Hurns. I find it very unlikely that, if they keep 6 WRs, 4 are first- or second-year players. Hurns is dependable, and that's more than you can say for any receiver on the roster not named Amari right now.

Just OTAs but this can't be a good thing for Allen Hurns.......

Cowboys news: Young receivers are all the talk from Cowboys OTA practices

The Cowboys have a logjam at receiver and the young guys are competing their tails off.

There are some encouraging things going on in the receiver department, one young no-name is starting to make a name for himself.

there is always excitement this time of the year, but I am hopeful on our WR group and we have to make some tough decisions and cut some guys that may/will be picked up by other teams. I don't expect to see Hurns or Austin, given there are younger, cheaper options. those guys are 4th, 5th option anyway. probably replace those guys with one of the speedsters Davis or Devin Smith perhaps and Johnson as a developmental player. he has some nice tools. I think Guyton goes to PS. we have to make tought decision between Noah Brown and Cedric Wilson. Noah, could be that hybrid WR/TE in Moore's scheme so that he can move him around and create mismatches.

I think Austin is on the bubble. he is the 4th option and not that good from the slot even with his speed. so if expect the top 3 getting 85% of the balls and snaps, its 15% of snaps and balls spread to the other three and we might go younger. cheaper.

I'm going 6 deep at WR and Hurns better show something in August or he won't be one of the 6 left standing in September.
i like hurns and feel he can have a place but at his price tag, his production may not match that.

“EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!”
“Dallas Cowboys skill-position players are looking good in June OTAs!”

Go to 31 other NFL teams’ fan sites and you’ll read the same hype.

It's news so I'll take it ... but I'll take it with a grain of salt. The fact that Reggie Davis is getting praise is likely just reflective that these type of practices favor receivers, especially those with speed. It's more of a track meet than a football game right now.

If Gallup improves like I think he will and Randall Cobb fills the slot role well, this receiving corps can be dangerous.

One other element that I hope happens which can make this receiving group even more lethal- expanding the route tree from the mostly over simplistic 9 yard in routes (on 3rd and 10) to a more complex route tree that is harder to defend. Rub routes, crossing patterns, moving receivers around more should also help.

Talent alone is not enough. If Kellen Moore is able to do some of the above, our offense should have an added dimension for defenses to have to deal with.
You aren't wrong, but we also need the pass protection to allow some of that stuff to develop consistently.

I thought Sanjay Lal made an excellent point in his comments:

"The whole premise, in my opinion, of this offense is vertical speed," Lal said. "If you can't hit a go-route, the comeback game isn't real, your slant game, your nine-stop game isn't real. Being able to hit those deep balls in games is going to change everything if we're able to do that."

I believe that was one of the huge problems this passing game had, they never challenged opponents deep. And if you can't or don't do that, opposing defense won't fear or respect your passing game, and they'll simply sit on everything short. And that hurts your running game with having more bodies closer to the line of scrimmage, as well as your passing game with defensive backs sitting on routes.

It will be huge if the Cowboys can start to scare defenses down the field again.

Yes, that's true but that is not a scheme issue, that is a QB issue. When is the last time Dak threw a deep in or over the shoulder throw to the receiver in stride?

Very true, but you do need targets at multiple levels, and speed has never been his game. He relies on experience, smarts, and savvy to get open underneath.

Agree 100%. Also, if the young receivers are truly capable of stretching the defense with deep balls then Witten will only become more effective underneath. He could post stats more in line with his younger self in that scenario. That said Witten’s biggest asset will be the red zone help though. Inside the 10 he is a master of finding holes.

And how many did the "scheme" call for? Not nearly enough. I specifically remember a beautiful deep throw to Tavon Austin early in the season that went for a huge play and six points. Never remember seeing that so much as tried again.

You may not like to hear it, but Dak's deep passing numbers are actually very good.

That's what I'm hoping for as well. Red zone is where this team needs the most help.

Yep and they the deep pass isn’t as high percentage as shorter stuff and everyone already thinks Dak can’t throw it. Will be interested to see what his completion % is this year. We will have several attempts a game if our WR can get vertical.

And Prescott does have to pull the trigger more as well. You can never make a shot you never take.

No, as you said, "talent is not enough", but the fact is that they have it. And it's now the coaches task to maximize that talent. They need to do their jobs - specifically Kellen Moore - and be an asset to that talent rather than a liability or a hindrance.
At least it’s not Scott L. Behind the headset any more. What a joke he was at OC.

Truly. And if anyone still had any doubt, take note of who picked up Scott Linehan after he was fired here. And yes, despite platitudes and pleasantries, that's exactly what it was, a firing.
