.....From 1954 to 1962, Dick Nolan played cornerback and safety mostly for the Giants but also for the Chicago (now Arizona) Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys. He then spent six seasons with the Cowboys as an assistant to the Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry, a former Giants teammate. At Landry’s request, Nolan also played cornerback in his first season as a Cowboys coach.

His first head-coaching job covered eight seasons (1968-75) with the 49ers. He led the team to three consecutive National Football Conference Western Division titles (1970-72). In the two conference championship games he coached (1970-71), the 49ers lost each time to Landry’s Cowboys. Nolan’s 1970 team, with John Brodie at quarterback, finished with a 10-3-1 record and led the league in offense; Nolan was named the N.F.L. coach of the year.

“Everything I know in football, I’ve learned from Tom Landry,” Nolan told the columnist Red Smith of The New York Times in 1972. “We play his defense, but so far we haven’t played it well.”

Nolan coached the New Orleans Saints for three seasons (1978-80). When his 1980 team started with a 0-12 record, and many spectators wore paper bags over their heads, he was fired. He was later the defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers (1981) and a Cowboys assistant (1982-90).......

I think the combination of Nolan and MM with a real analytics department could really be a boon for this team. You have two guys who've seen it all willing to encorporate analytics and adjust in accordance. For once the Cowboys might be ahead of the curve in coaching. Maybe.

I wouldn't be shocked if they go defense heavy in the draft and bring in someone they both know to coach the backers.

I am Garretts most hated fan of all time. I have been lobbying for his firing for 13 years.

Seeing Garrett fired is like winning a SB for me. Its been a hell of a week. Couldn't be happier.
McCarthy and Nolan are strong hires. Together, they are very strong. Nice to see McCarthy picking his guys.

Replacing Garrett with McCarthy is unreal. Getting an aggressive, young defensive mind like Nolan is well over due.

Oh yeah. I like Coach Popovich's approach: you can have days where the points don't come, the ball doesn't go where you want it to go, but you can always play defense.

I especially liked how he answered the fact about him "lacking football knowledge." He acknowledge the criticism and stated that is why he dedicated building his analytics department to figure out what works and what doesn't. He didn't blame anyone - not even pointed the finger on Rogers.

I think McCarthy learned from his mistakes and used that as an opportunity to improve and get better as a coach.

I just want a barn!

Hopefully, Jerry opens the pocketbook a little to give them what they need. We're only going to be able to do so much of it through the draft.

We have some players we have to retain, but we can afford a few key pieces as well. Then supplement that with the draft.

I think at 17 there will be some good safety and CB options but doubt any good DT options
Things can change and players can drop but that looks like the positions of quality at 17 right now
We need both so hopefully we can get a good one

You are not. I do think he has done well as a LB coach in NO. He took over a good Atlanta defense in 2012 and turned it into crap in 3 years. His record is not good. It is a surprising choice frankly.
