Amari Weight An Issue?

Amari came into camp this year considerably bigger. Not really fat or bad weight but you could see how much bigger his arms looked. I liked the idea at first because I felt it could toughen him up a bit and help against press as a true #1.

What I think it did was contribute to injures. Since camp he’s been dealing with lower leg injuries and re-aggrevated them throughout the season. He’s an explosive quick twitch guy that uses speed, quickeness, and footwork to blow by corners. How many times, especially during the second half of the season, did you see that same explosion? You can criticize it how you want but he wasn’t himself quickness wise.

Two interesting things, he’s had a history of bulking up before and having injury plagued seasons, like in 2017, his only non-pro bowl season.

Also the Cowboys have him listen at 210, which I think is closer to what he weighed when he got here.

I think if Coop gets back to 215ish it keeps him healthier and explosive. That equals less disappearances and more worthy of a 18M+ deal. Get him to sign a tag and you get the added motivation of playing for a long term deal.

Could’ve but he looked unbelievable for about 10 weeks and then just took a complete nose dive.

It’s probably a good thing he slowed down and gave us a little leverage for contract negotiations.

I don’t think his actual weight was an issue

But I swear I heard Ambar Garcia mention he went full vegan. Which would screw up his recovery if he’s not getting enough protein.

I think I heard so as well. Completely agree, that's a common mistake vegans make. Id hope he knew better though and has a good nutrition plan.

I still believe he was hurt and didn't admit it. May have cost him.... I think Amari is a good kid, a lot of talent but he's a fine-tuned machine. He's like a Ferrari. Has to be perfect in every area to perform. Gotta pay for that luxury. Otherwise, get yourself a Dodge Hellcat for a year or two until it Nosedives. Not sure there is an in between.

Vegan, weight gain, who cares? He showed us what he truly was, aka, a good WR. Not elite or great, but good. His “Do I really like football”? Attitude doesn’t help. I wouldn’t mind keeping him, but if we need to move on, not much will change (good or bad), weight gain or not.

Gezz.. first Romo, then Zeke.. now Amari. I’ve never heard of so many grown men talking ab another man’s weight. THESE ARE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES PEOPLE! I’m sure they’re in better shape than anyone posting.

This is going to be a long offseason..

C’mon..

When did I say he was out of shape? I literally said it wasn’t bad weight he just bulked up. This isn’t a theory either that he put on weight he said it himself in the offseason

I wasn’t implying that you said he was out of shape. Personally, the narrative that a player is or isn’t out of shape gets old. I feel like players, exp at this point of their Pro careers, know what it takes to be ready for the grind of the NFL season. And if they don’t, teams have a staff of nutritionist on stand by to help them. So, I will never question that part.

Now, we can question whether a player was 100% healthy. Sure, but then again.. if the player doesn’t attempt to play through injuries, they are wrongly criticized by fans for that too. So it’s a ‘no win’ situation. Bottomline, players have to play to their respective expectations or they will be questioned for better or worse.

That said.. I’m not a NASCAR fan, but I liking these athletes to sports cars. The competition is steep, so slight adjustments like weight lifting, diet, techniques, even type of cleats can give them an advantage. So, like the sports cars before each race, adjustments are made. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Athletes, like Amari, may gain/lose weight.. either way, they need to perform.

At the end of the day.. whatever Cooper did.. he had the best professional NFL season of his career. He just needs to work on the jugs machine all offseason and he’ll be fine.

You are selling Cooper short. From the time he got to Dallas until he started getting hurt, he was a top 3 WR in this league. He is still a top 10 WR at the least.

He's had foot injuries since his days in college.

It would be smart if Dallas told him to be light and fast, and not use him in high traffic areas.

Injuries happen. Not sure adding weight caused these injuries or it was just bad luck with hits/going to the ground.

This is a common misconception. There’s little doubt that even high performance athletes can meet their protein needs with a plant-based diet. And there’s an already large and growing body of scientific evidence that a plant-based diet actually improves performance, including by improving endothelial function. Check out the Netflix doc ‘The Game Changers’ for an entertaining survey of the current state of the research.

If Amari is having performance issues they’re almost certainly unrelated to adopting a plant-based diet.

I’m not sure why you are bringing posters into this discussion. No posters here (that we know of) are playing for the Cowboys.

He looked like he was top 5 at one time. His drops and disappearing act sat he’s not even top 10. IDK which to believe but there is risk in paying him $20m.

I like him and I would like to keep him but I would NOT pay him $20M. I would flip him for picks and try to replace him in the draft or free agency.

I still sign him, we shall see what the numbers look like, but it will be a top contract.
If your going to give up a first, than you better damn well know the price.
Cooper is at the marginally elite level, the drop in production was due to playing hurt.
Im investing in a healthy 2020 Amari Cooper full throttle,, Daks growth would be stunted significantly without him.
Would suck to throw away a 1st round investment for a shot at postseason that failed, if that's the only reason to void this team of Coop, than that's a huge negative IMO.
