So you're saying that BPA won't work, then?

I'm joking with you.... Yes, there are some positions that should NOT be considered in the first round. TE is certainly one of them for the current roster. The financial picks, salary cap picks are LT, WR, CB .... rookie contracts for those positions free up paying superstars on the current roster.
There’s only 1 position (QB) that can take you from bottom feeder to contender in 1 offseason.

The other positions (LB, DT, WR, and CB) are the next tier of positions that can make you take a leap.

And no, offensive linemen isn’t one of em. The Cowboys offensive line the past 15 years is proof that it doesn’t matter how great your O-Line is they’ll only be good enough for a few Wild Card wins if your QB sucks.

You find your QB then worry about your O-Line. Not the other way around.

Go ahead and draft another decade long 1st team all pro LT like Tyron was for us.

It got us what? 3 whole Wild Card wins in his career?

What a game changer.

So teams that have been to/won championships recently, like the Eagles and 49ers, teams who have drafted OL in the first round over the past few years, are not “serious franchises”?

The last time the Eagles drafted an offensive lineman in the 1st round was 5 years ago, he’s no longer an Eagle.

The last time the 49ers drafted an offensive lineman in the 1st round was 6 years ago, and before that it had been 18 years since they last took an offensive lineman in the 1st round.

Good try though, bro.

We will be trading back for more picks. Too many holes to fill.
That’s how we ended up having our worst draft ever in 2009. More picks don’t guarantee anything. We need to hit on a real good player with our first pick. The further we trade down the less likely we’ll hit on a real good player. With several QBs going early there should be a real good player at 24 if we make the right pick. We’ve had real good luck with OL picks in the first round.

Your forgetting those that say our QB issues are related to how bad our O-line is. Though.................. top 7 in avg. for the past how many years. Comical to think o-line is the root of the issues!!!! Packer game was the oline issue according to a select few.

We’ve had one of the greatest offensive line runs ever the last 15 years.

It was wasted because of losers like Romo and Dak.

Now we have no nothings wanting to recreate it all over again.

Make it make sense.

Picking an LT can be a financial strategy though... The QB position has sometimes, rarely (Trent Dilfer) been a small part of a success. Low odds, though if your QB isn't above average. Sadly, truth is that Dak is above average... although he is the opposite of clutch.

If the best LT ever was on the Panthers last season they still finish with the worst record in the NFL.

The Cowboys have had a 1st team all pro LT for years now and it’s yielded nothing.

When that first team All-Pro left tackle was missing games Cooper Rush was still winning without him.

LT’s aren’t games changers.

I’m sure Jerry and Stephen are converting themselves with the financial side of things, but as a fan I much prefer they draft a position that’s going to impact the team the most.

Just to clarify, you guys referring to Chop or Darius with your Robinson call-out?

Trade down from 24th with the 49ers for their 31st (late 1st round) and 94th (late 3rd round) picks. Then trade that 31st pick with the Commanders 40th (2nd round) and 100th (last 3rd round) picks.

That leaves the Cowboys with picks:

2nd round:
#40
#56
3rd round:
#87
#94
#100
5th round:
#174
6th round:
#216
7th round:
#233
#244

I would say for the Cowboys to trade Trey Lance for a 4th round pick, but Jerry's ego stubbornly won't do it.

I understand that, but we are talking about GM Jethro.

They may try getting their 4th and 5th round picks back but they really need to come up with a real good player at 24. If they trade down in the first round it will greatly reduce their chances of coming up with an impact player. We can’t afford to screw up with our first pick. If they trade down in the second or third round that’s fine.

Well typically there are 15 to 18 first round grades. If there are 60 second round grades, then it would be in our best interest to trade back. The 24th pick will most likely be a second round grade, unless something falls in our lap.

Dallas Cowboys 1st Round Selection History by position 1989 to Present (Jerry Jones' primary GM influence began April 1994)

Summary for years when Dallas did not draft in the first round:

1993 - traded out of first round with Green Bay for Kevin Williams (2nd round #46), Darrin Smith (2nd round #54), Derrick Lassic (4th round #94) and Reggie Givens (8th round #213)

1995 - traded out of first round with Tampa Bay (and later with Atlanta in second round) for Sherman Williams (2nd round #46) and Eric Bjornson (4th round #110)

1996 - traded out of first round with Washington for Kavika Pittman (2nd round #37) and Clay Shiver (3rd round #67)

2000 - traded out of first round with Seattle (Joey Galloway trade)

2001 - traded out of first round with Seattle (Joey Galloway trade)

2004 - traded out of first round with Buffalo for Julius Jones (2nd round #43), Sean Ryan (5th round #144) and Marcus Spears (1st round #20 in 2005)

2009 - traded out of first round with Detroit (Roy Williams trade)

2019- traded out of first round with Oakland (Amari Cooper trade)

______

Anything is possible but those thinking first round quarterback should begin hoping Jones' bucks his own history since the odds are not favorable.
