Has anyone ever really done an in depth review of this whole "number of wins against winning teams" premise?

I always see it brought up around here and it's almost always in a way to discredit us.

What is s good frame of reference for this?

How many wins do the teams that are generally recognized around here as "good" actually have against teams with winning records?

I'm kind of surprised one of our resident stat gurus haven't dug into this topic already as it comes up pretty frequently around here. (or maybe it's already been dissected and I missed it)

This year, the Cowboys have just 1 win against teams with a winning record: Kansas City.

They've been able to squeak by some bad teams like Oakland and AZ, they have beaten up on some bad teams like Washington, and they have pooped the bed and gotten blown out by teams like Denver, Atlanta, Philly, and the Chargers.

They looked competitive in some of the losses, and obviously, they are a different team with Zeke. If they do get to the playoffs, do you really see them winning a game? I don't.

They went toe-to-toe with the Rams and Packers (with Rodgers), and the defense is playing better now.

But they won 13 games last year and didn't win a playoff game, so...but I'd still like the opportunity.

Judging by the title of this thread I thought I was going to open it up and find that it was about the Eagles. hehe :D

This is a the current state of the NFL. Parity is a fickle woman.
True on the current state. But teams like the Steelers, Seahawks and Patriots always make the playoffs. We are on this repeating cycle of one good season followed by crappy one(s) in which we are home for the tournament.

It is a quarterback driven league and you better have a good one at your disposal or else your team will wallow in perpetual mediocrity. So if your team has an average quarterback your only real chance of winning a SB is based on the rare chance your team has a generational defense to carry them all the way.

No. Which is why I haven't taken part in the who needs to lose/who should we root for stuff. They're not making the playoffs and even if they did they wouldn't do anything once there. So I don't care. Get to the offseason and hope we're a better team next season.

It is a silly premise. Washington would be 8-6 had we not beat them twice.

We don’t yet have the talent to be in the playoffs every year. Our coaching is not good enough to make up for this shortcoming of talent. Maybe one day.

How do you think Garrett has hung on to his job for 7 years. His record vs rookie coaches is abysmal.

A better issue is schedule. This year the NFC East played the AFC West and NFC West. The AFC West isn't a dominant division but none of the teams are doormats and you could literally expect any one of them to win that division. NFC West has one terrible team in the 49ers.

Now go look at the NFC North. Detroit is still in the WC chase because they drew the AFC North and NFC South. They get pushovers like the Browns, Bengals, and TB.

We are fighting for a playoff spot largely because of issues like that.

I thought about this the another night

I thought why hasn't anybody on the forum made a post wallowing in the fact the Cowboys haven't beaten any winning teams.

Then I went to PFR home page and I seen, there are no good teams in this league!

A few. But most of the league was sitting on 8-6.

Rams and Philly. Atlanta has a winning record but I don't think they're any good. Shame our receivers couldn't shake the Falcons coverage. Dak actually looked up for the challenge in that one. Team let him down!

There are six 8-6 teams in second place, and one 8-6 team in its division lead. Only the NFC South has two double digit winners in it.

That type of year.
