Exactly what have the Dallas Cowboys proved to George Pickens? What have they ever done in his lifetime for him to care about the team? For him to be confident it’s where he wants to continue his career? Perhaps if Jerry Jones would demonstrate a level of capability building a bonafide competitive roster, Pickens would be anxious to be a Cowboys player. Perhaps if Jerry Jones demonstrated enough respect for George Pickens by being professional enough to do business with his representation he’d be excited about being a member of the Cowboys.

Pickens doesn’t know everything, but you can bet he knows he does not have 30 years of playing in the NFL ahead of him. This close to traditional free agency, perhaps he’s decided to do just enough to get whatever the franchise tag guarantees him and bide his time until he can escape the Cowboys organization.

you are missing the point - it doesnt matter if its the cowboys or another team - if he is thinking about how to maximize his money and earnings, the best thing he can do is make himself as alluring to teams as possible - he does that by saying and doing the right things, regardless if he is still a drama queen at heart.

My point was not to say that he owes anything to the cowboys, but rather that he could increase his marketability by the steps i mentioned - regardless of where he ends up playing long term.

True but the talent level at WR in this year's is no where Pickens who bye the way wasn't a 1st round picks due to character concerns. I think he has grown up a bit, how much is the $36 million dollar question.

I don't think anyone expects a rookie WR to come in & match his production. Possible but unlikely. The question is about marrying the player (who has red flags) & marrying a long term financial commitment to said player when you have already married a #1 WR.

Those are some of the things the poster I was responding to didn't seem to want to acknowledge or gloss over.

I understand where you are coming from, but it simply can't be stated enough. Pickens put himself in this situation. No one else. If not for the well documented issues in Pitt, he would already have a long term deal with someone. If not for those issues, we wouldn't have gotten him for a third. He gave the Cowboys the right to control his future by being in a situation where he wanted out of Pitt & they wanted him out of Pitt. I doubt it would be any different if another team had acquired him last year so it's not a "Cowboys" trap he's in. It's the "give the league reason not to trust you and they won't" trap that he created.

lets be clear here - he has a contract offer for $27MM on a fully guaranteed deal - lets not make him out to be a victim.

His character is an issue or he 1) would have been drafted higher 2) would have not been shipped for a 3rd to dallas or 3) would have a long term deal in place already.

And no, teams will not just judge him on what he can do for him - they will also judge him on the risk he could bear to the team chemistry and liability if he were to have on field issues.

It doesn't matter if jerry is a bad gm, that has zero bearing on PIckens ability to put himself in the best ability for long term marketability - Again if PIckens were to sign his tag, be the good teammate etc, and show maturity it would help put some of those character issues lower on his radar and help him be more desirable to other teams - thus increasing his likelihood to get a big FA contract next year OR be more tradeable.
