11 Draft Picks is Too Many!

I think the cowboys will package multiple picks in this draft in an attempt to move up in several rounds. We need quality not quanity. As Jerry has stated on a number of occasion. We have an aweful lot of firepower with all of these draft picks. I don't have a mock draft per say, however I used the standard NFL trade valuation chart to justify my logic.

Also I don't think 11 rookies could make this roster.

I would package the #51 overall pick with one of our 4th round picks (4b. not 4a.) and Greg Ellis, and send them to cleveland for the #36 overall pick.

I would draft Duke Robinson from OU @ #36 overall. I think he would win the starting LG spot in TC and this will allow us to release Kosier which should save about 2 Million in cap space this year. Also we would get signifigantly younger, more talented and save $$$ all in one transaction. We could pencil in Robinson at LG for the next 10 years.

This makes alot of sense for severall reasons. Ellis has obvious experience as a 3-4 passrusher and would seem to be a fit for Manginni's scheme. Ellis is a likely cap casualty anyway. Ellis would offer cleveland a reasonably cheap stop gap Passrusher while still accumualting extra draft picks for themeselves. The net loss for the cowboys would only really be the 4th round pick as we would have probably cut Ellis without receiving any compensation, and the two 2nd round picks involved cancel each other out.

In the 3rd round, with the 69th overall selection. I would draft the best Cover Saftey prospect available. I would not be adverse to drafting a college CB with above average size and toughness and converting them to S. I like that idea because normally a player plays saftey in college because they couldn't cover.If you can't cover in college you probably won't have an epiphany in the pro's. I doubt Sean Smith of Utah will be available at #69; But I do like Rashard Johnson of Alabama as an Ed Reed type of playmaker at FS. Also I was very disappointed that Macho Harris of VATech ran a 4.68 at the combine. He is a helluva football player and looks great on tape. He is just too slow to be a full time starting CB in the NFL. He did run a 3.98 short shuttle so he is quick and can change directions very well. I think he is physical enough to move to FS he just lacks top end speed. Also most VT players are good special teamers because Beamer emphasizes it soo much. I would consider Harris at #69

Finally I hope Jasper Brinkley of South Carolina is still available with 1st pick of the 4th round that we received from Detroit. He was an SEC Def. POY type prospect as a junior before the knee injury. He ran 4.6 at over 250+ lbs. at the combine, So he is athleticlly 100% now. Trust me, Brinkley is a stud. He will start opposite Brady James for years and may even eventually replace him at Mike LB! I think he could beat out Brooking as a rookie if he learns the scheme quickly.

Recap:
#36 OG Duke Robinson-via drfat day trade
#69 DB Rashard Johnson or Macho Harris
#100 ILB Jasper Brinkley

Spend the rest of draft adding quality depth all over the roster.

We would have 3 future starters out of this draft. plus Olshansky this off season. 4 New young starters in any off season is productive! who know maybe we find a couple of gems like we did last year later in the draft.

For a team that went 9-7, I don't believe 11 picks is too many at all. It may be a problem cap-wise, BUT talent-wise, I say bring in as many talented players as possible and let them fight it out. Additionally, you can never predict injuries so having good depth is a must.

I agree with you.

I think sometimes as fans we overestimate the talent on our team.

I can easily think of 11 spots we can upgrade on our team.

I definitely think they'll be aggressive if they see people they like

As Jerry has stated on a number of occasion. We have an aweful lot of firepower with all of these draft picks.

Jerry also said he could see 25-30% roster churn, so there are definitely alot of potential openings, especially when it comes to backup players

Also I don't think 11 rookies could make this roster.

I dont either, but it isnt as much of a stretch as we believe

I would package the #51 overall pick with one of our 4th round picks (4b. not 4a.) and Greg Ellis, and send them to cleveland for the #36 overall pick.

We wouldnt need to throw in other stuff with Ellis to move up 15 spots. People for whatever reason hate on the guy, but he rushes the passer and does a good job at it. He has trade value.

I wouldnt trade up for the guy, mainly because I think he'd probably be available anyway at 51. He scares me a little.

They arnt going to cut Ellis and we dont need the cap room. They'll either get something of value for him or he'll be on our roster next yr.

I dont have a problem with the 3 picks you made here, but I wouldnt trade up for Robinson. I really like Rashad Johnson

i would not be a happy camper if they packaged multiple picks to move up and draft a Guard-that would be plain stupid.

i agree with dbair, i see the cowboys packaging some picks to move up, move down etc,

remember the cowboys have to recoup the 5th round pick in 2010, in fact, thats what you want in 2010, extra picks, that will be the draft that you want extra picks;

and i would be real happy if the cowboys get duke robinson or herman johnson, or ron brace

now i also think the cowboys will go after a wr in the draft too, a speed guy;

i also think the cowboys will trade greg ellis to enable them to move up in the draft or get extra picks, possibly even trade crayton;

if they do trade crayton, look for the cowboys to go after Holt ex wr from rams

I'm with ya on Johnson Dbair, he has become my favorite option outside Smith and has a real shot of being there when we pick.

I would expect them to move up a few spots if they like someone, but I'd more so expect them to get a couple of picks for next yr

i think both, the cowboys will trade greg ellis (possibly crayton too) to move up in the draft, and possibly package some picks too to move up,

also the cowboys will trade down a few picks to recoup their 5th round pick in the Holland trade from denver.

you also have to remember the cowboys might get a 3rd rounder next year for losing canty;

that will help somewhat;

but all of the picks you have extra, if any picks are cut or released, then that hits your salary cap, so you want to hit on your draft picks from now on pretty much

I wish Burnett had signed for more, but with us signing Igor, that will keep the Canty loss from getting us a better comp.... crap was Brookings cut or a FA?

I really like the players on your Mock Draft. I think we would have to move up to get Duke Robinson. He is a NFL starting OG perhaps as early as his rookie year. He is the consensus #1 OG in this draft. He won't make it past #45.

I too love Rashard Johnson @ #69

Jasper Brinkley will be gone in the 5th round. We have two 4th round picks I would draft Brinkley at #97 which will really be #100 after the 3rd round compensatory picks are added.

After this I would take the best Player Available while especially watching QB's with developmental upside, Big Strong Traditional 2 gap NT's, Speed WR with KR skills, Value CB's like Orlando Scandrick late in the draft

Dallas will try to move around as they always do and you can bet they'll jump a few slots here and there.

I doubt seriously they trade off Ellis and Crayton to move up for a Guard though.

That would be dumb. While Robinson may be a better player than Kosier he isn't a better play caller. Kosier keeps our line adjusted and we are far better with him than without him. so we can't replace him until we replace Gurode. Because Gurode is a physical beast but he is really poor at setting up the line.

Also we have Montrae Holland who is a Duke Robinson type player.

So I do not at all see this happening.

I do like the Rashad Johnson selection quite a bit and he may even fall to that spot.

If we are moving up as you suggest the pick will probably be Connar Barwin or Clint Sintim and they'll be playing OLB.

Could be a number of teams depending on what they do on draft day. He's had success at DE in a 4-3 and as a pass rusher in a 3-4, so it keeps alot of options open. Guys that get 8-10-12 sacks a yr along with the pressure he gets dont grow on trees.

When was the last time that Jerry went through a draft without making a trade (a trade on a draft day or a few days before)?

I assume that has happened before, but I doubt it has happened very often.

My reaction: Of course Jerry is going to try to trade picks. That's what he does.
