I think the cowboys will package multiple picks in this draft in an attempt to move up in several rounds. We need quality not quanity. As Jerry has stated on a number of occasion. We have an aweful lot of firepower with all of these draft picks. I don't have a mock draft per say, however I used the standard NFL trade valuation chart to justify my logic.
Also I don't think 11 rookies could make this roster.
I would package the #51 overall pick with one of our 4th round picks (4b. not 4a.) and Greg Ellis, and send them to cleveland for the #36 overall pick.
I would draft Duke Robinson from OU @ #36 overall. I think he would win the starting LG spot in TC and this will allow us to release Kosier which should save about 2 Million in cap space this year. Also we would get signifigantly younger, more talented and save $$$ all in one transaction. We could pencil in Robinson at LG for the next 10 years.
This makes alot of sense for severall reasons. Ellis has obvious experience as a 3-4 passrusher and would seem to be a fit for Manginni's scheme. Ellis is a likely cap casualty anyway. Ellis would offer cleveland a reasonably cheap stop gap Passrusher while still accumualting extra draft picks for themeselves. The net loss for the cowboys would only really be the 4th round pick as we would have probably cut Ellis without receiving any compensation, and the two 2nd round picks involved cancel each other out.
In the 3rd round, with the 69th overall selection. I would draft the best Cover Saftey prospect available. I would not be adverse to drafting a college CB with above average size and toughness and converting them to S. I like that idea because normally a player plays saftey in college because they couldn't cover. If you can't cover in college you probably won't have an epiphany in the pro's. I doubt Sean Smith of Utah will be available at #69; But I do like Rashard Johnson of Alabama as an Ed Reed type of playmaker at FS. Also I was very disappointed that Macho Harris of VATech ran a 4.68 at the combine. He is a helluva football player and looks great on tape. He is just too slow to be a full time starting CB in the NFL. He did run a 3.98 short shuttle so he is quick and can change directions very well. I think he is physical enough to move to FS he just lacks top end speed. Also most VT players are good special teamers because Beamer emphasizes it soo much. I would consider Harris at #69
Finally I hope Jasper Brinkley of South Carolina is still available with 1st pick of the 4th round that we received from Detroit. He was an SEC Def. POY type prospect as a junior before the knee injury. He ran 4.6 at over 250+ lbs. at the combine, So he is athleticlly 100% now. Trust me, Brinkley is a stud. He will start opposite Brady James for years and may even eventually replace him at Mike LB! I think he could beat out Brooking as a rookie if he learns the scheme quickly.
Recap:
#36 OG Duke Robinson-via drfat day trade
#69 DB Rashard Johnson or Macho Harris
#100 ILB Jasper Brinkley
Spend the rest of draft adding quality depth all over the roster.
We would have 3 future starters out of this draft. plus Olshansky this off season. 4 New young starters in any off season is productive! who know maybe we find a couple of gems like we did last year later in the draft.
