I don’t get some of these responses. Either people don’t actually understand stats or they are just blindly accepting the ‘never pay a RB’ mantra. Tony Pollards career yds/rush is 3rd highest in NFL history. 3rd.
Couldn't the Cowboys do even better than that in the draft? My understanding is that RBs are not very hard to come by in the draft. Lots of evidence that it makes very little sense to ever pay a RB a 2nd contract.
Elliott is valuable in more ways than the stats show - but I think the real issue is his total value does not match his contract/cap hit. That's the issue.
Also, I'd be looking to move on from Pollard instead of sign him long term. Franchise him for a year, but keep the RBs coming. Start next draft with 2, from real picks, with plans to move on from Tony the following year.
