Defensive Ends
  1. Demarcus Lawrence
  2. Jeremy Mincey
  3. George Selvie
  4. Kyle Wilber?
  5. Ben Gardner
  6. Anthony Spencer
  7. Tristan Okpalaugo
  8. Caesar Rayford
  9. Edgar Jones?

Defensive Tackles
  1. Tyrone Crawford
  2. Ben Bass
  3. Nick Hayden
  4. Frank Kearse
  5. Terrell McClain
  6. Ken Bishop
  7. Henry Melton

Of which I think we end up keeping what 10? So it should at the very least be a competitive battle in camp to see who stays. That competition at the least should raise the bar.

Most 4-3 teams keep 8 or 9 but with Marinelli's "rushmen" focus, I could see 10.

Wilber is a LB, you can take him out, but you need to add Martez Wilson as DE.

Near Locks DE:
Lawrence
Selvie
Mincey

Near Locks DT:
Melton
McClain

Near Locks DL:
Crawford

Highly likely (IMO):
Gardner (will he be on IR?)
Bishop

That leaves 2 or 3 spots open for the following;
Martez Wilson
Spencer
Okpalaugo
Rayford
Kearse
Bass
Hayden

1T: McClain Bishop Hayden
1T/3T: Kearse Jones
3T Melton
SDE/WDE Selvie Spencer
WDE: Lawrence

There are also the UDFA like Whalen and Coleman

i imagine we will not keep more than 9

Hey this is an aside but I thought it interesting that Broaddus in his writeup on Hitchens said that he thought that he was sometimes good and sometimes bad on taking on blocks. Would go a long way towards reconciling our disagreement with his technique in that regard. I like that we both can be right :)

I would agree with that. There were definitely times that he got tied up or boxed out but other times he avoided or shed blocks that many college LBs don't avoid/shed.

Overall, I really like the player. He does a lot of good things that are difficult for me to put into words because they're subtle but effective.

Iowa's defensive line was not good in 2011 and 2012. It improved in 2013 and hopefully will become a strength in 2014. The three graduating linebackers didn't have a lot of help in front of them. Out of the three, Morris got the most local press because he grew up 15 minutes from Iowa City. Kirksey had the best measurables. Hitchens was the one I noticed most during games.

While quite a few posters are down on the Hitchens pick, I look at it another way (over the short-term, at least).

As much as I like S Lee, I can't honestly say I expect him to play a 16 game season. Hitchens will in all probability be a starter for several games this year at MLB. He could easily be starting between 3-6 games. It would not surprise me. Don't get me wrong, I hope S Lee can stay healthy, but . . . . We don't really have anyone who can play as a potential starter at MLB for several games a year without reshufling the entire LB corps. Hopefully Hitchens can do that in the short-term.

And who knows, a year from now if Carter isn't around, maybe Lee moves outside and Hitchens can push for a full-time starting role at MLB.

He tore his peck all the way back in October, pretty sure he's already 100% from that. He didn't seem to be limited at all from what I saw at his pro day.

I see us keeping 9 with Hayden/Bass competing for the final DT spot and Wilson taking the final DE spot until/if Spencer is ready to come back.

OK, thanks. I just saw that he didn't lift and was not sure of his injury status.

I'm hopeful that the young guys perform to the point that Hayden and Spencer don't make the team.

I really interested to see Ken Bishop against NFL players. I think he can move Hayden off the roster at the 1-tech.

I think we may keep up to 12. Spencer and melton probably start the year on pup. I think we are going to see a lot of changes on dl like last year.

Here are my 10 at this early stage.

DE
Lawrence
Selvie
Spencer
Gardner
Mincey

Yikes

DT
Melton
McClain
Crawford plays DT and DE
Bishop
Bass

Wilber is better at OLB
Unless Spencer can play, DE is still shaky.

Cowboys are going to need a bigger meeting room. At least to start off the season.

I wouldn't write off Devon Coleman at DT.

8 1/2 sacks this past season. 35 reps at his pro-day with a 5.08 forty.

Agreed. I think he is the only other true 3 tech on the roster after Melton. Good chance he's the primary backup there.

I really, really like Bishop a lot. Pretty dynamic for a big guy, which is of course what Marinelli wants.

I think he makes it.

Martez Wilson is my sleeper of the group.

I'll be shocked and disappointed if Bishop can't beat out Hayden.

S now they get to make the decision on Crawford - is he quick twitch enough to be behind Melton ? I am now somewhat more comfortable with this draft after a day to digest it. I am concerned we never address any of the Tackles untill 7th round - free agancy. Think for the 3rd year running DT will have to be a high priority (next years draft) but, if the plan is to have Crawford back up Melton this year and push next at the 3T. Maybe we can groom him ? Maclain, Bishop and Coleman to man the 1T ? Still pissed about a 2nd and 3rd for a situational pass rusher - but hopefully he can calm my nerves as we go thru training camp .....
