Took these August 5, 1989 during a training camp scrimmage between the Cowboys and San Diego Chargers. The scrimmage was held at a high school about a block from the teams practice field in Thousand Oaks. Fans were allowed to come on the field after the scrimmage to take pictures and get autographs. This was the first training camp under Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson and the last training camp held at Thousand Oaks. The foundation for the Cowboys championship teams of the 90s started 4 months earlier with the drafting of Troy Aikman with the #1 overall pick and the Herschel Walker trade 2 months later in Oct that sent him to Minnesota for several draft picks, one of which was used to draft Emmitt Smith the following year.

Danny Noonan one of the biggest draft disappointments during Tom Landry's final few seasons as head coach. High expectations were placed on Noonan who was drafted to eventually replace an aging Randy White. Not even Jimmy could get a lot out of Noonan. The emergence of Russell Maryland, Tony Casillas and Jimmy Jones spelled the end for Noonan who was released 2 games into the 92 season.

Tyrone Thurman one of the smallest players to ever attempt to make and NFL roster at only 5' 3" 126 pounds. He didn't have the size for the NFL and went to the CFL/arena league.

What position did #1 play? WR? Kicker?

I'm all for getting those quick Beasley types but 5'3 126 lbs is about 5-7 inches to short lol

Tyrone Thurman was a kick returner. He was all about speed. Oddly enough he drew some of the biggest crowds at the scrimmage. Everyone was amazed at how small he was.

Little did anyone know what was starting there. Really appreciate you sharing these.

Side question: How did you get these from Polaroids to digits and have them come out so well?

Funny, I had a friend with me that day and he was kind of bummed because of all the young players. Randy White had just retired in April and Ed Too Tall Jones along with Herschel Walker were about the only established players left. I told my buddy that some of these young players like Aikman and Irvin could eventually become great players some day.

By the way the Cowboys outscored the Chargers 14-7 during that scrimmage.

I remember watching him play at Texas Tech.

He was a very explosive kick returner at Texas Tech which is why Jimmy brought him to camp. His lack of size was too much of a detriment. He looked like a 10-year-old walking around in pads.

Nice...I thought the Norton Jr and Sr were at odds during that time. I think Danny Noonan and Nate Newton got in a big fight during that training camp.

I know it's popular to hate on Jerry. But look at where he's taken this franchise. Heck I practiced on better fields in my little country town (was) of Muskego WI than that practice field the cowboys used.
That pic of that small guy is really cool. That's a really cool pic and factoid. That is TINY. He must have had some serious skills to even make it to a training camp at that size.

Dude, these pictures are awesome, thanks for sharing! Feels like yesterday, as 89 was when I became a cowboys super fan. I remember the Cowboys weekly newspaper I used to get. I had saved those alfor a while but they eventually found their way to the trash.

Me too! How ironic is that. Troy was drafted, Jerry purchased the Cowboys from Bum, Jimmy Johnson became HC & our 'Boys only won a single game, against the 'Skins. Then 4yrs later won their 3 SB. It really does feel like it was just yesterday. I laugh when non 'Boys fans tell me I became a fan AFTER they won their 5th. Pft....
