Took these August 5, 1989 during a training camp scrimmage between the Cowboys and San Diego Chargers. The scrimmage was held at a high school about a block from the teams practice field in Thousand Oaks. Fans were allowed to come on the field after the scrimmage to take pictures and get autographs. This was the first training camp under Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson and the last training camp held at Thousand Oaks. The foundation for the Cowboys championship teams of the 90s started 4 months earlier with the drafting of Troy Aikman with the #1 overall pick and the Herschel Walker trade 2 months later in Oct that sent him to Minnesota for several draft picks, one of which was used to draft Emmitt Smith the following year.

Danny Noonan one of the biggest draft disappointments during Tom Landry's final few seasons as head coach. High expectations were placed on Noonan who was drafted to eventually replace an aging Randy White. Not even Jimmy could get a lot out of Noonan. The emergence of Russell Maryland, Tony Casillas and Jimmy Jones spelled the end for Noonan who was released 2 games into the 92 season.

Tyrone Thurman one of the smallest players to ever attempt to make and NFL roster at only 5' 3" 126 pounds. He didn't have the size for the NFL and went to the CFL/arena league.

I know it's popular to hate on Jerry. But look at where he's taken this franchise. Heck I practiced on better fields in my little country town (was) of Muskego WI than that practice field the cowboys used.
That pic of that small guy is really cool. That's a really cool pic and factoid. That is TINY. He must have had some serious skills to even make it to a training camp at that size.

The Cowboys were in such a deep hole when Jimmy arrived, he took fliers on a lot of free agents and brought them to camp. Trying to find a recognizable player wasn't easy that day. When I first saw Tyrone Thurman I thought it was some kid who showed up dressed in a Cowboys uniform. lol The other players were towering over him, I was thinking is this guy for real? He was the smallest "adult" I saw that day, including in the stands. His head was so small it was a wonder they could find a helmet that fit him. I was standing on the field after the scrimmage, I kept thinking to myself if this would have been 10 years earlier I could've been rubbing shoulders with Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Harvey Martin and many other Cowboys greats and now here I am surrounded by a bunch of rookies and free agents.

Too Tall Jones appeared to want no part of a picture and autograph session. He headed for the locker room immediately after the scrimmage. I don't think he was real thrilled with the change that was going on and probably thought he might not even make the final cut. It was obvious Jimmy was cleaning house and didn't care about a players reputation.

He wanted the veteran players to prove they still had it. Although it was disappointing that a lot of the Cowboys greats were no longer around, it's a cherished memory to have been able to stand next to a couple of players, Aikman and Irvin at the beginning of their careers who went on to have Hall of Fame careers and lead the Cowboys to 3 championships.
