The first day of free agency was solid, but it needed to be more than that. I like that Dallas was active and clearly trying to land the players they wanted, but after years of sitting on the sidelines and shopping in the bargain bin, it still feels like they left something on the table.
I keep coming back to Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean. Yes, both got paid, but it’s frustrating that Dallas lost out—especially to the Raiders. That says a lot. The Cowboys don’t feel like a destination anymore. Players are going where the money is, and Dallas isn’t willing to push far enough.
Jerry Jones’ charm worked in the 90s, when Dallas had the allure of being a championship team. That pull is gone. Now it feels like an owner struggling to stay relevant as a GM. Jerry once again seems out of his league. He is both the GM and the owner and could have done more on the defensive side of the ball. The talk about “busting the budget” doesn’t line up with what actually happened.
Quincy Williams, Boye Mafe, and Alontae Taylor were all there, yet we sat back and watched other teams snatch them away. Linebacker and defense were clear needs.
Overall, the Cowboys did okay. But okay isn’t good enough. This should’ve been a great start to free agency—not an average one.
