1. Defense- obvious. Letting Ryan go was foolish. The multitude of injuries were unfortunate. The ever present lack of a good safety in Dallas remains a major hole/weakness. This offense can and will usually score, with good field position. They need personnel/strategy to get the games back for them when they falter (particularly when having a lead and/or late in the game) Defense. Obvious.

2. A pass-catching RB and scheme to match- this team needs a different style of RB (has for a long time; throughout the Romo era) and a gameplan which focuses on utilizing the RB in such ways. A pass-catching back whom is ultilized for... ahem... catching passes out of the backfield (moving the chains; an everpresent check down option)

L. McCoy Philadelphia eagles-52 receptions 2 tds

D Murray Dallas cowboys- 53 receptions 1 td

Thanks for beating me to it. Murray is exactly what this team needs when healthy. He is versatile and shifty enough. He breaks a ton of tackles and has that second gear. He has great hands and is very tough to bring down in the flat.

What strikes me is this. Ryan, Kiffin, Phillips, it doesn't matter if the players are not of the caliber to make the defense work.

You can draw X's and O's until you are red in the face, but if the player cannot complete his assignment, then the name of the DC is unimportant.

Yup- if your horses are slow, they are not going to win many races no matter how good their trainers are.

So the cowboys achiefed 8-8 in 2012 with Ryan as DC and with a relatively healthy defense.
And the Cowboys also achiefed 8-8 with Kiffie as DC and with a defense that was devastated by injuries.

And you lament us letting Ryan go. The brothers Ryans are known for two things: being outlandish and underachiefing.

Anybody who things Ryan would half thrived with our defense this season is . . . is . . . well, misguided.

Relatively healthy in 2012???!!! Not sure which team you watched in 2012 but you're not talking about the team I watched which was the Cowboys. And even with all the injuries in 2012 (Lee, Carter, Ware, Ratliff, etc.)Ryan didn't set team and NFL records for atrocious play.

Not a big fan of Ryan but, again, he didn't set records for pitiful play.

Relatively healthy as compared to this year's injury carousel. Hail yeah!
I just think Kiffie needs another chance with a healthy group of players.

I personally would not be upset if kiffin were back for the exact reason that you mention....I think if the team is relatively healthy, the defense is a middle of the pack group and we would have won 10 to 11 games this year, possibly more

that being said, if they do can him and Rod goes with his lovie-love-love, then I would want to see an experienced defensive mind get the DC gig, like frazier or someone from the Seattle crew

1. Why? Ryan's results in New Orleans don't mean firing him was wrong, nor do our own results without him.

2. As has been pointed out, Murray is a good receiver out of the backfield. As is Lance Dunbar, who was starting to carve out a niche in this offense when he got injured on Thanksgiving.

Fair enough. I like the we-have-all-we-need-right now approach- but something isn't clicking.

Still need a safety.

So you look at the Cowboys defense and determine that the top 2 issues are not having Rob Ryan and needing a Safety?

QBs had time to eat a snack while standing back there waiting for receivers to get open. A coordinator and a Safety are not going to fix that problem.
