Might not want to complain about redzone offense being that we were 3rd in the league with almost a 20% increase from the year before.

Where did you see a complaint about the red zone?

I personally would not be upset if kiffin were back for the exact reason that you mention....I think if the team is relatively healthy, the defense is a middle of the pack group and we would have won 10 to 11 games this year, possibly more

that being said, if they do can him and Rod goes with his lovie-love-love, then I would want to see an experienced defensive mind get the DC gig, like frazier or someone from the Seattle crew

This defense will never be relatively healthy. Not as long as the "core" of Ware, Lee, Carter, Claiborne, Church, Wilbur, Spencer, Johnson, or Crawford are on the roster. Or with three confused senior citizens, and their trainee are manning the ship...

So you look at the Cowboys defense and determine that the top 2 issues are not having Rob Ryan and needing a Safety?

QBs had time to eat a snack while standing back there waiting for receivers to get open. A coordinator and a Safety are not going to fix that problem.

Because there is a leak at the front of the boat doesn't mean there isn't another one at the back of the boat.

IMO safety play has been a problem since Woodson got retired and Roy got fat. It has hampered considerably all of the CBs we have brought in to fix the problem we have at Safety.

No question DL is now an issue because we decided to switch to a defense we hadn't drafted for or planned to run on the spur of the movement, but if we are going to commit to the Cover 2 Safety is a massive issue we are not addressing correctly.

You said throwing too much in the redzone.

I made a statement that said it doesn't surprise me that we were 3rd in passing PPG due to the numerous amount of times the passing game gets to put em up regardless of where the ball is positioned (including the red zone where we tend to pass alot). STATEMENT, not complaint! There's a difference. Shocking we would be at the top of that stat with all of the passes we throw. Truly shocking!!

The DL problems are not due to the scheme change. The injury problems would have been an even bigger problem if they stayed with the 3-4.

Spencer is the only guy that could play the SOLB in the 3-4. It is a really difficult position that requires a player that can cover, rush the passer and set a hard edge against the run.

Selvie would not be able to play in the 3-4.

They don't have an NT with Ratliff and Josh Brent both gone.

Wilber was better as a 4-3 LB than he was as a 3-4 OLB.

I don't hate Ryan, but I thought he was overrated in many senses. I thought he looked foolish against the read-option and if a team was willing to surprise the defense with no-huddle, it would really fool him. Case in point, the Saints vs. the Pats. The Saints defense looked like a disorganized mess because the Pats fooled them with no huddle.

I think Rob needs to be with a team that has a very good offense and let him grow into his D-Coordinator role. I think he's a sharp mind, probably not as sharp as he thinks he is, but he really needs to grow into that role as D-Coordinator and have an offense that will make up for his mistakes. In essence, I think the Saints is a great role for him. But I think a lot of other teams, not just the Cowboys, he would have issues as D-Coordinator.

Plus, I think the 4-3 has a bit more to offer with how offenses are designed these days. They are either going with some sort of read-option look or a spread them out and throw the ball all over the place (NFL averaged 57% pass attempts this season). If they go read option, the 3-4 is too much read-and-react to defend it. If they spread them out and throw, throw and throw, now 1 of your 2 best pass rushers is going to be in pass coverage too often. And if you look at the top defenses in the NFL this year, most of them were 4-3.

IMO, we have to figure out the pass defense and I don't think this pass defense will ever be anything that can be relied on until it gets 2 quality safeties. I think that our philosophy on defensive backs is the biggest missing piece and problem with this organization. Jerry still thinks it is 1995 where players mostly ran deep pass patterns and you needed a cover corner that could stay with the WR. These days it is about shorter and shorter passes, particularly outside the numbers. The offenses WILL complete a high percentage of passes. You need physical corners that can at least fight on those short passes and that can tackle when the player catches the ball. And you need good safeties because they are being asked to do so much more these days. These days there really isn't a true SS or FS as both switch positions. They'll have to blitz, play the run, drop way back in zone coverage, cover RB's, TE's and WR's.

The Steelers suffered from the same exactly issues back in 2000-2004-ish. Except they had physical corners. Their safeties were weak because they didn't value the position as much. Finally the organization saw that they needed good safeties and drafted Polamalu. Then they uncharacteristically put in a high big for then FA Ryan Clark.

If we look at the front 7 over the years, we've had plenty of talent come thru there like Ware, Spencer, Stephen Bowen, Jay Ratliff, Sean Lee and even Bruce Carter (don't know what happened). And we've had some talented corners. But, ever since Woodson got hurt we have tried to 'get by' with the safeties on the roster just like we did with the center and guards on the O-Line. Finally we said 'let's get a really good center in the draft' and we got Frederick and we started to see noticeable improvement. I just wish we valued the last line of the defense much more than we have in the past 15 years.
