Here's my "fantasy land" type scenario. Trade for Bly, 1st and 2nd for Bly and Detroit's second. Take the best OL available with your first couple picks. Re-sign Gurode and Columbo. Draft DBs and WRs with return ability the rest of the way. Let Drew walk and sign somebody like Rattay as a backup.

Oh yea and Sparano and Garrett would be co-coordinators. Sparano would do most of the play calling.

He said, and this is a near direct quote -- "We are focusing heavily on the defense in the draft."

Now his mind can change at any point, obviously. I was just pointing out what he has said.

Or perhaps not. Just read this nugget from Peter King on page 98 (most of which is a story on Jason Garrett) of this week's non-swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated:

Terrell Owens, due a $3 million bonus if he's on the Cowboys' roster in June, is no lock to get it. New coach Wade Phillips said last week that Owens is "part of the Dallas Cowboys family," but owner Jerry Jones has the final call, and he says he hasn't made a decision on the wideout yet.

UPDATE: Jerry said Thursday night that he expects T.O. back ... probably.

If this is the King article I recall, King pretty much speculated throughout the whole thing. I can't think of a single instance Jerry has ever even implied it was a possibility TO wouldn't return.


As for offense - we have drafted exactly two (2) offensive players in the first round of the draft since 1991. Alvin Harper and LaFleur.

Now, we did give 2 first rounders for Galloway and give away our 1st a few years ago to draft Jones in the second, but I think it is obvious that Jones has placed a premium on drafting defense.

It's funny - I get the feeling that he is afraid that an offensive bust hurts more than a defensive bust (don't ask me why), yet how many passrushers have we busted on?

I'm not saying reach for offense, just that we can't go into every draft wondering how to make our defense better without looking at the offense.
