Maybe it's because I'm a ..ya know.. a Cowboys fan or something, but for some reason, I am really excited about the potential of this year's defense.

1. Ellis for a full season
2. Tank for a full season w/experience in this defense.
3. Spencer going into his 2nd year.
4. Zach Thomas bringing some needed leadership.
5. Draft/Pacman/??? - something good happening there?
6. Campo as DB coach..better than Bowles IMO.
7. Campo working with RW..can he coach him back to rookie season form?
8. Most importantly, the players will now have the benefit of playing in the same system for a year.

I think these are solid reasons to have confidence that the 2008 Phillips D is going to be a good one.

Never too early to get fired up about some dominating Cowboys D. Let's hope anyway.

We trade for Champ Bailey, Antonie Cromatie and Asominga(Oak) and were still play zone, 15 yards off the recievers and give up 13 yard chunks whenever the offense feels like taking it. I was joking about the db's but not the scheme.

Heck no. Lots of good points raised in that post. Bring on Doomsday again!

9. No Jacques Reeves!

Hope you don't mind, but I added one I felt was needed.

I liked reading the positive tone of this thread and agree with you 100 percent....thanks

I am excited about this whole team! We have retained our starters from last year (you know when we went 13-3) and have only lost some backups (Julius was going to be the backup in 2008 if he stayed). We have an excellent young QB, a solid team on both sides of the ball, and we should get some of our guys back from IR.

The point about being in the same system 2 years in a row will help as well. I was not very excited about getting Campo back as the DB coach but I wasn't thrilled about the job Bowles did so it can't be too bad. If he can get Roy to play again then it is well worth it.

With San Diego, in his first season there they improved from 31st in points allowed to 11th. They experienced no improvement in pass rush, however.

In his second season with San Diego (5 times fast), they went from 29 to 46 sacks. An increase of 59%. In his third season with them, they leapt from 46 to 61 sacks, a 33% increase. It's doubtful they would have continued such a rise, but they ought to have maintained or experienced a drop based on the down numbers league-wide for sacks last season.

If we matched the increase the Chargers experienced in Wade's second season, we'd hit 73 sacks. Extremely unlikely.

But I wouldn't put 60 out of reach, depending on what we get from some LBs who need to step up. It's only natural that the comfort that comes from familiarity will result in increased production.

Wow! Those numbers are phenomenal. It would be nice to see some of that head our way. I truly believe that if we could have put that kind of pressure on Eli in the last game and Brady when we played the Patriots, those games would have been different. Nice research punk.

We increased in sacks by 35% last season. Which is pretty good considering the rest of the league showed a pretty significant decrease in sacks from 06 to 07. Hopefully that continues next season.

Great job!

With a jump in performance in the secondary 60+ sacks can be acheived......

Its all about improvement in the secondary, of course some additional push from Canty & Spears positions would be a added bonus.........

I do feel pretty good about our Defensive team and especially if we get a good 3rd CB in the draft. I'm really more worried about getting a nice RB compliment and much better special teams play.

I felt good about our d for the last 2 years in a row and they let me down every single time.

I'll feel good about them when I see a consistant defense...And non of this soft crap either.

Carp will be unleashed this year (after he transitions into his new nickle corner role).

:hammer: x 100

Like SP said, Wade's first year in SD, he focused on getting the run D shored up. It was the next year that the sacks really started taking off.

Frankly, I was amazed that our pressure and INT numbers went up so much in the very first year of a new system. I think we'll see even more improvements with familiarity and a couple of new player additions. I don't think Wade was ever that comfortable with a few players he inherited -- Akin and Reeves are two that we know of.

I think Wade's voice is going to be heard when it comes to who the personnel is too.

Ultimately, I think the defense is going to take another step forward next year, and that's pretty exciting.

You also forgot the addition of new coaches, besides Campo... they are all coaches that teach an aggressive and attacking style of play..
