2010 Pro Bowl moving to Miami, will be played before Super Bowl

NFL.com Wire Reports

The 2010 Pro Bowl will be played one week before the Super Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 31 and both games will be staged in Dolphin Stadium, the NFL announced Tuesday.

"We are looking at alternatives to strengthen the Pro Bowl," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We will continue to work with the players to make it a great event and will evaluate this concept after the 2010 Pro Bowl."

The site and date of Pro Bowl games after 2010 will be determined at a later date and will include playing the game on a rotating basis in Honolulu, the NFL announced.

The current AFC-NFC Pro Bowl format, which began in 1971, rotated annually between host sites until 1980 when it moved to Honolulu. The 2010 game also won't be South Florida's first Pro Bowl: the 1975 game took place in Miami's Orange Bowl. The game has been held in Tampa, Seattle, Dallas, Kansas City, New Orleans and Los Angeles on three occassions.

It's not a new notion to have the game moved up to take place between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. The NFL has discussed it multiple times in recent years, and Goodell told the Associated Press last month that having the game precede the Super Bowl would avoid a "somewhat anticlimactic" ending to the season.

The initiative to experiment with the Pro Bowl schedule and location was discussed over the past two years with NFL club owners, the NFL Players Association, the NFL Player Advisory Council, and other players, and it received wide player and club support.

"Moving the Pro Bowl to the Sunday prior to the Super Bowl can add even more excitement to Super Bowl week, one of the most anticipated weeks of the year," said Frank Supovitz, the NFL’s senior vice president of events. "Taking the Pro Bowl to new locations can showcase our top players to more fans around the country. We are also in discussions with key leaders in Hawaii to continue our partnership with the State of Hawaii, which has embraced the Pro Bowl for 30 years."

In addition to the Pro Bowl's annual ticket subscribers, tickets to the 2010 Pro Bowl at Dolphin Stadium will be made available to Dolphins season ticket holders, as well as to fans across the nation. Pro Bowl annual ticket subscribers in Hawaii will maintain their account status for any future games at Aloha Stadium.

The 2009 Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 8, and will be televised on NBC at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Count me in the "It's a stupid idea" category.

Imagine a Pro Bowl that doesn't have any of the Super Bowl players in it.

The NFL is trying to out think itself.

Plus, I doubt there will be a big incentive for Miami players to participate.

So what happens to the players that get voted in and are playing in the Super Bowl. I highly doubt they will take the risk before the biggest game of their life.

I think it's a neat idea to tie it into the Super Bowl and have it rotate yearly to where the big game is being played. Playing devil's advocate, though, I wonder if anyone will really care about a Pro Bowl anymore a week before the Super Bowl than a week after. Let's get real -- the buildup for the Super Bowl is huge, and a Pro Bowl interrupting it won't even register as a hiccup.

The other thing is that, while I'll miss the whole Honolulu stuff, this opens the game up more to the fans. It can be hard to travel to Hawaii to go see the thing unless you live there.

I'm assuming there will just be an unwritten pass (or, heck, maybe written) that permits all the Super Bowl guys to skip the game. They'd get voted in, and then be replaced a week before the Pro Bowl once the Super Bowl teams are set.

Most of the people that attend the Pro Bowl are visitors to Hawaii.

Yeah, but it just seems like it would open things up to a grander scale having it back on mainland.

Maybe, but this has all the makings of a fiasco, and the NFL will come back to Hawaii, mark my words.

So I guess this means Romo, Witten, Owens, Ware, Barber, Williams, Newman, and Ratliff won't be playing in next year's pro bowl due to injury concerns?

After having my guts ripped out this past weekend, I really dont give a dam right now about the freaking probowl.

They can have it on the freaking moon for all I care right now.

(I am still a little upset if you cant tell, unlike our players on the flight home).

NFL-----Romo you made the pro bowl in Az.........

Romo---No thanx man ill be out of town that weekend......

bad idea.......... why is the NFL trying to fix something that isnt broke?

the pro bowl will be no bigger than the QB challenge in the wake of the Super Bowl festivities......and why take away from Hawaii.....they are Americans who never get to see any NFL games live and now they lose this ......

I think it's quite clear the NFL knows the Pro Bowl is the red-headed stepchild of pro sports all star games and is desperately trying to rev up an NBA All-Star weekend type of interest.

Unfortunately, that's just never going to happen. The sport itself in my opinion isn't very conducive to an exciting all star game.

I'm not opposed to them trying to change things up a little, as I -- despite rarely being able to take my eyes off NFL on TV -- haven't really watched a Pro Bowl game in full in a long time other than to catch some of Romo the last two years.

But despite some of the intrigue I see in the plan here, it reeks of being doomed.

Changing when and where the game is played isn't going to make this a game worth watching.

A weeks worth or so of practice simply isn't going to result in a good football game. It might work with baseball, basketball, or hockey, but football is a different animal. Plus you can't expect these players to go all out and risk injury for a game that has absolutely no meaning. Heck, that's why there are always some players who find ways to skip the entire fiasco.

Actually I think it's a great Idea the Probowl will be played a week before Super Bowl. The weeks before the Super Bowl are very dull and the media is dragging stories. Imagine the Probowl in Dallas with all those stars singing autographs and the parties around the city im for it.

I do think this is worth trying at least once.

The Pro Bowl has become so stale that its hard to justify it being televised anymore. Most fans have moved on from the NFL after the SB.

Its obvious that the Super Bowl players would not participate, but so what? Half the starters for both sides bow out of it anyway and we end up with a bunch of alternates. Hell, I think a lot of those guys would rather go to jury duty than play in the Pro Bowl anyways.

Having it be the week before the SB will fill a void when there is still peak interest in the NFL, but no game.

Another option is to hold the Pro Bowl as the Hall of Fame game in Canton which is the first pre season game.

The Pro Bowl blows but moving it to the week before the Super Bowl is ridiculous.

Nobody from the Super Bowl teams EVER playing in it?

Stupid.
