This is an economic disaster for us here in Hawaii.
The Pro Bowl is one of, if not THE biggest boosts we get every year. And not just the economic problem, but we look forward to seeing and meeting a lot of people in the NFL.
I'm from PA, lived in TX for a few years, and have lived here on The Big Island for 22 years now. Every year, after the actual game, the players and coaches and even some owners spread out over the entire state for vacation and a little R & R. It's not uncommon whatsoever to run into these folks in shopping centers, movie theatre's, at the beach, etc...........everywhere. It's almost like a hobby for folks who live here to compare and swap stories of who they met, where they met, etc...............
Last year, I met Mike Holmgren at a resort we we're remodeling a spa at. Nicest guy in the world. I didn't even approach him, but he saw me pointing him out to a couple of my employees. He just came walking over and "talked story" with us for a few minutes. I got dozens of stories like that. Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Rod Woodson, just a few of the guys I've visited with.
At the actual Pro Bowl game, it's made for fans to intermingle with the players and coaches. Access to the field and sidelines is nothing like an actual game, where NOBODY gets even close. They have actual scheduled times and places in the stadium to hang out with NFL folks.
Anyway, it's a sad day for Hawaii folks to have the only decent NFL thing for 3,000 miles taken away.
