I was of the opinion last year that any old back can run behind this line. I know longer believe this. If you have a chance to get a work horse, you need to take him, especially THIS team.
I just don't think our schemes lend themselves to an "average" back. I think we need playmakers in every position, including the running back position.
I wouldn't pick Derrick Henry or Ezekiel Elliott in the top 10. But if they drop to the 20s (assuming we're drafting in the top five), I try to jump back into the first round and pick them - Elliott and Henry in that older.
I'd rather spend our top pick on either a defensive player (DT, DE or CB) or a quarterback. We have become so dependent on Romo that I think a reality has been skewed for us. It's ALWAYS about defense. Unless you have a franchise quarterback (and I'm not convinced Goff or Lynch are) available for the picking, then you go defense. How did Carolina get so good and sneak up on everyone? It's because of defense. Our defense basically held Carolina in check for the first half. We gave up 14 points on offense because Romo was doing what Romo has done his entire career - we let the game be about HIM. That is our philosophy. We need to change that philosophy and focus on strengthening the defense even more and return to a running team.
That will not only preserve Tony Romo's career, but it will change the mentality of this team to one where we're going to be smash mouth both on offense and defense.
