Notes from Monday's practice:

  • No quarterback in FBS history has more career rushing yards than Navy's Keenan Reynolds, who tallied 4,559 rushing yards over the last four seasons. He also set the Division-I record for total touchdowns (88) and finished fifth in the 2015 Heisman Trophy voting. But with his size (5-10, 200) and skill-set, Reynold's best fit in the NFL is at running back, a position he has never played. However, with his experience as a ballcarrier in Navy's option offense, the transition should go smoothly. And if Monday's Shrine Game practice is any indication, Reynolds looks like a natural at the new position.
  • At 6-0 and 245 pounds, Stony Brook pass rusher Victor Ochi lacks ideal size and length, which showed during practice when he lined up with his hand in the ground as a defensive end. But his burst off the ball, aggressive hands and quickness to close also was on display, turning a few heads with his movement skills. Ochi needs space to be effective, making him a possible fit in a 3-4 scheme on his feet. It will be interesting to see if the coaches give him any reps standing up at linebacker.
  • It was an up-and-down practice for Boston College safety Justin Simmons (6-2, 201). He struggled in one-on-one drills, getting his feet tied up and failing to cover receivers in reverse. But during seven-on-seven drills at safety, Simmons was able to read the quarterback and jump routes, knocking down several passes and intercepting one of them.
  • It was a shaky first practice for the quarterbacks, which isn't uncommon as they acclimate themselves to new teammates, new coaches and a new playbook. Western Kentucky's Brandon Doughty (6-2, 216) was the most consistent of the passers with his smooth release and accuracy when in rhythm. Over the next few days at practice, scouts will be watching to see which quarterbacks show improvement and adapt the coaching they receive.
  • Arkansas State Darion Griswold (6-5, 265) certainly passes the eye test with his large, athletic frame, but the former high school quarterback is still learning how to best use his size to his advantage. While he has ballskills and clear upside for the NFL, the one area Griswold needs to improve for the next level is his balance, both in his routes and at the catch point.

Reynolds would be interesting. Super smart guy, and awesome on the football field. Small, but I can see him have a good career.

I've seen people put the Lance Dunbar comparison on him but I don't think it's fair to the kid to have that kind of expectations for him on the next level.

Service Academy players aren't normally available for a couple of years at minimum due to their service obligation. The services have become more lenient in releasing players from that commitment in recent years, but players have had to serve at least two years IIRC. Do you know if anything has changed on that front? Otherwise, this kid will probably be drafted very late, if at all. I'm not even sure where he would be drafted if he were immediately available.

I don't really pay attention to it considering there's never been a quality NFL player that's come out of Navy.

Belichick took a long snapper from Navy last year that ended up playing right away. I think things are a lot more relaxed than they were in the Staubach or Chad Hennings days.

Our most dynamic weapon that we sorely missed last season! Remember the, if we just had Dunbar threads?? The dude played what 3 games in 5 years and got injured in 2 of them!

Thanks. Good to know. One never knows when another Staubach or football's version of David Robinson might come along again.

What we learned Monday at East-West Shrine Game practice
  • By Chase Goodbread
  • College Football 24/7 writer

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Count South Florida defensive back Jamie Byrd as a believer in Memphis' Paxton Lynch, the star junior quarterback who has announced his intention to enter the 2016 NFL Draft. Byrd, who is trying to catch NFL scouts' eyes as a safety at the East-West Shrine Game, knows exactly why Lynch has already done so after facing him twice in his college career.

"He's a great quarterback. I feel like he's the best quarterback I played against in two years. He's very patient, and I feel he's NFL-ready right now," Byrd told College Football 24/7. "He stood out, man, with the way he sees the field and the way he checks it down to the right guy. He can make every throw."

There is little doubt Lynch's physical skills are exactly what NFL coaches and scouts look for. But coming from a Group of Five program like Memphis, he didn't face the highest level of college competition on a weekly basis. That could make his transition to the NFL a bit tougher, but it's no wonder Byrd sees something special in Lynch.

With Byrd roaming the secondary, Lynch completed 20 of 33 passes for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 24-17 win over the Bulls on Oct. 2. The previous year, Byrd and the rest of the South Florida pass defense surrendered 18 completions in 23 attempts to Lynch in a 31-20 Memphis win. Lynch is vying with the likes of Cal's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz to be the top quarterback prospect in the 2016 draft.

"The guy can just do it all," Byrd said.
Lynch will get the chance to show that on a crucial stage next month at the NFL
Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Here are some other things we learned from Monday's practices for the East-West Shrine Game:
2. Reviews glow for Glasgow. After Michigan pounded Florida, 41-7, in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day, coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that center
Graham Glasgow, a former walk-on, would not only play on Sundays but had a chance to be drafted on a Thursday.
"Graham Glasgow, what an amazing player," Harbaugh gushed. "He could be a first-round pick, the way he played, the way he's played all year."
No doubt, Harbaugh was using coaching hyperbole. But Glasgow did stand out on Day 1 of practice, catching the eye of NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock.
"He was the guy who really stood out to me," Mayock said. "It's a strong year for centers, but he looks like an NFL starter. Very strong. He could compete at the
Senior Bowl."
Seniors
Ryan Kelly of Alabama and Nick Martin of Notre Dame are considered the top two centers in this year's draft, followed by another 7-8 with draftable grades. Glasgow now should be firmly in that latter category, and could move up to mid-round status as the draft process continues. He's off to a good start, and it never hurts to have guys like Harbaugh and Mayock in your corner.
3. Reynolds returns. Don't assume Navy QB Keenan Reynolds' only hope of making an NFL roster is at running back. He's also going to work on returning kicks before the draft to make himself more appealing to pro scouts, and in fact was pulled away by Shrine East team assistant coach Troy Brown on Monday to catch some punts after practice. Brown returned 252 punts and 87 kickoffs in his NFL career, so for Reynolds -- who never returned a kick at Navy -- Brown isn't a bad place to start for tutelage.

Some interesting guys this year

East- WR Robbie Anderson, CB DJ White, S Deon Bush, DE Romeo Akwara, DT/DE Anthony Zettle, DT Nile Lawrence Staple
West- CB Lloyd Carrington, CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun, DE/DT Aziz Shittu, DT Luther Maddy

Those are just the guys on my radar. I'm sure some of the other guys from smaller schools can play too, will be a big game for them obviously. Still interested in seeing Sudfeld does as well. Big kid with a good am, just not sure anything else is there as of right now.

I have read the usual conflicting reports you always see from people reporting from practices. Just like it is when you see the training camp reports.

One person said he looked terrible and was inaccurate, another person said he was the more impressive of the QBs there.

I'm getting old. I remember his dad Aziz ****tu Sr.

I want him to be drafted in the first round just so I can see Goodell stammer and have say his last name, just so I can snicker like a 10 year old.

Javon Hargrave | Defensive Tackle
Team: South Carolina State Bulldogs
Ht / Wt: 6'2' / 295

LATEST NEWS
RECENT NEWS

Per NFL.com's Chad Reuter, South Carolina State DT Javon Hargrave has a chance to work his way into the middle rounds at the Shrine Game this week.
The 6-foot-2, 300-pound Hargrave is a two-time Associated Press FBS All-American. He posted 29.5 sacks and 45.5 tackles for loss across the past two years for the Bulldogs. Now, he's getting an opportunity to show his stuff against vastly superior competition in the form of potential mid-round picks like Cincinnati's Parker Ehinger, Michigan State's Donavon Clark and N.C. State's Joe Thuney. "A strong performance by Hargrave attacking gaps and holding the point when necessary could take Hargrave from intriguing small-school star to valued mid-round interior defender," Reuter wrote. Rotoworld's Josh Norris noted the following at Tuesday's Shrine practice: "Joe Thuney has been the only OL to slow down Javon Hargrave in 1 on 1s through two days." Jan 19 - 10:44 AM
