Vernon Adams was very impressive. I watched more tape of him and he could be a steal in the 3rd.
Honestly, when was the last time the Cowboys actually drafted some of the more popular mid to late round targets in the draft? Every year when the actual draft is taking place there is always a level of disappointment in their picks. At least after the 2nd round. A pick gets announced. The fans grumble. Then, of course, you start to see the majority of the board suddenly announce their secret love and support of the player they never bothered to mention in the months before the draft.
When it happens every year, I can only assume it'll happen this year as well. So start focusing on the players you're glossing over in the draft process because odds are there are more soon to be Cowboys there than the same names you read here on a daily basis.

Patrick Watkins - a fan favorite...did not do much for us.
AOA was a fan favorite before the draft...did not do much for us
Deangelo Smith and Mickens (DBs out of Cincy) - some of us wanted one of those guys...did not do much for us
Josh Thomas - Some were high on him...he is not a star by any stretch but he is still with the team
JJ Wilcox and BW Webb were two names bandied about by fans prior to their drafts - Wilcox is still with the team, to the dismay of many
Ahmad Dixon - some really wanted him (I was in the don't want camp)
Ken Bishop Some of us loved the pick ( I was one)
Laurence Gibson Don't think anyone loved the idea of taking him but there were some thinking he would be a good pick.
I get your general idea and you are correct that we don't get many of the players we like...but at the same time, I think we have drafted more of the players we bring up and like pre draft than you realize.
But you are also correct on the no namers and It would appear we have a current trend of taking LBs from Big Ten schools as @Chris in Arizona has mentioned.
I was intrigued by AOA. The fact that Kam Chancellor went 7 picks later makes its sting even more. Josh Thomas went 11 picks before Richard Sherman ..sigh. We also took Matt Johnson 8 picks before Josh Norman. Imagine how different this defense would be had been fate (and skill) been on our side during those drafts.
Combine that with the proclamation that Morris Claiborne had the highest grade of any defensive player since Deion and a higher grade than his LSU teammate Patrick Peterson, and I am seriously worried about this Front Office's evaluation of defensive backs. Then there's the issue of aoching them as well.
Sometimes, and this is the jaded side of me, thinks that even if we got those guys (peterson and chancellor or add name here) we would be talking about how if only we would have gotten , add another player name here...
Agree and disagree.
I think a lot of that, drafting in the middle rounds and later, is luck. Which is way I said we needed "fate" on our side.
But the mentality that is still wouldn't work out or that we (fans) would have an issue with whoever we draft tends to give the decision makers a free pass. My biggest complaint of GM Jerry for the past two decades has been the lack of accountability. He can make bad choices and blame luck, injuries, or whatever because he doesn't have to answer to anyone. A real GM, is accountable for their picks, so there is an inherent pressure to make sure you make good picks. Your livelihood literally depends on it.
Actually it is the opposite of giving them a free pass.
It is me blaming this FO and Coaching staff (current or former) in not getting the best out of some of these players.
just to clarify.
I figured that's where you were going...not maximizing players.
I meant in general..it gives the GM excuses. Players not producing, coaches not getting the most out of players, but nothing about just actually selecting the wrong guys.
