The league has set the salary cap at $167MM for the coming year, according to Judy Battista of NFL Network (on Twitter). That marks a $12MM+ bump over last year’s cap figure of $155.27MM. Here is the year-by-year breakdown of the cap, going back to 2013:

  • 2013: $123MM
  • 2014: $133MM
  • 2015: $143.28MM
  • 2016: $155.27MM
  • 2017: ~$167MM
The $167MM figure falls in line with the most recent estimates we heard, which pegged the cap to be somewhere between $166MM-$169MM. Starting on March 9th, teams will be able to put this extra cash to use in free agency and we should see monster deals for the top players on the open market. The Browns will lead all teams in cap space with $102MM+ in room to spend.

We’ve come a long way in the last twenty years. In 1997, the salary cap was set at $41.5MM.

It's kind of unheard of...most teams can get away with paying much less fro their O line and still contend in the playoffs.

A big chunk of it is dead money going to pay for a 37 y/o QB that hasn't played in 2 years and we are told that trading him is wrong and we should release him and do the right thing.

The Commanders should be around 10 million now after the Kirk tag yesterday, right?

I'd rather see a lower cap and be able to watch the game with less commercials while also being able to afford to go see a game or 2 a year. right now its bordering on unwatchable and going to see a game just not worth it

The disparity in cap space available is ridiculous, no team should have 40 million more as their cap than the lowest. Not that the Browns are going to spend 217 million, but the NFL needs to limit these caps or do away with the salary cap all together..

The NFL has rule also that teams have to spend so much money, I believe.

Teams have to spend 89% of the cap in cash between 2017 and 2020 but there is no punishment for missing out

Spending in cash is a lot different than cap hits ..........signing bonuses and restructures count as cash for the year they are paid even if they are prorated over 5 years of a contract........no teams missed the 89% floor for the 2013-2016 period
