2017 QB's

The fact is next years QB class is better than this year at the Top. Meaning Franchise/Impact Quarterbacks.

If by some act of god we were in a position to draft Watson next year, I wouldn't even blink twice. He's Cam Newton II.

lol - in what universe do you live in

this the same Sam Wyche that is a HS coach and had only 3 winning seasons as HC In the NFL

So sorry I would be soo fin sad if we pick Watson - another wasted pick on a AVERAGE QB

I hope Wateon is the number one pick so that Dallas will have no chance of drafting him. Wyche made the point that Watson would run the ball and that results in injuries. Every year there is one or two of these running QBs with a decent arm that everybody goes crazy over. RG3 was a good example of what usually happens to those type of QBs. I like a QB that can escape the pass rush, but I don't care for a running QB. I guess some NFL team will eventually start using the spread offenses with running QBs like they use at the college level . They can draft the good spread type of QBs later in the draft and they could keep four of them on the active roster to compensate for the injuries that are sure to happen. It would be interesting to watch a team try this.

Ummm, you asked for a name. Should I give you more? Should I add what UGA's head coach said? How about Cam himself? Oh yeah, what's your resume again? Funny, in this universe, he will more than likely be a first round pick next year. Sorry that you are so down on a college qb who hadn't even played his junior year yet but led his team to a NC game. Bye Felicia, and I don't mean Brad Kaaya's mother.

He runs, but he is not a "running qb" and his arm is better than decent. He runs about as much as Chad Kelly and I should know since I have watched both of them closely over their college careers.

Regardless, next year's crop of qb prospects are better than this year's crop IMO; if Dallas does draft one, I hope it is someone who can replace Romo in a few years after having the chance to sit on the bench and learn the pro game. Most of the QBs coming out are going to need time to adjust to the pro level.

I’ll predict that Watson will be the most controversial prospect in the 2017 NFL draft. To paraphrase what someone once said about the French Revolution, there’s something for everyone to claim in Watson. He’s clearly got a good level of natural arm talent and can do well placing the ball-especially deep.

He also is growing as a player at a staggering pace. On the other hand, the offense he plays in is so limited in the decision making that they ask the quarterback to make, that Watson looks like a high talent project. It was very often in 2015 that Watson held onto the ball for more than a few seconds. And that’s troubling.

Unless Watson takes some big steps forward as a passer in 2016, he is not pro ready when he comes out for the 2017 draft. His mechanics need a lot of work, especially his footwork. He looks to run far too much(although this could be a function of the offense he runs) and he needs to improve his arm strength for a defense to take the threat of medium routes seriously.

Right now, just about everything he does is a short pass off of a play action or a deep route outside of the hashes.

All that said, a smart NFL team can do something with this. He needs to sit for a season or two and just learn and that’s why it would be best if he wasn’t a top 20 pick. There would be too much pressure on the team to start him before he was ready. Ideally, he would go to a team with a Kubiak style offense where he could playaction and bootleg a lot.

And this is why Watson reminds me of a lesser talent Robert Griffin III, who also should have gone to a Kubiak offense team(although one could say that Mike Shanahan should have taught him that offense but that’s for another day). And I have him rated as a 2nd round pick.

Where he needs to improve: First of all, he needs to get bigger and stronger. He has a lean and narrow frame, but he should be able to add another 10-15 pounds. As a passer, he needs to do a better job of reading coverage post snap. This offense does a beautiful job of setting up a defense and then cashing in with big plays. However, there are times when Watson will predetermine his target and throw the ball without seeing the field. His interception vs. Alabama (see video above) is an excellent example. His target won the one-on-one matchup, but Watson failed to see the over-the-top defender, resulting in an easy interception. His ball placement also needs work. He misfires on too many layups underneath. While he excels at escaping pressure, I'd like to see him do a better job of maneuvering within the pocket.

Biggest takeaway: Watson is an outstanding playmaker at the college level but he needs to improve in the passing game. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were both superior as pocket passers in college. Watson has a similar skill set to Marcus Mariota, but Mariota is bigger, faster, stronger and more accurate.
