Long...

I have been wanting to take a look at the cap situation down the road after the TFred signing, and see just how many more guys we could afford to sign / re-sign. 2018 seemed like a good year to take a peek. The numbers are all from spotrac and meant to get a rough estimate only.

I'm going to assume the cap increases 10mm per season. I am also going to assume we restructure 20mm next season and in 2018. That gives us an extra 12mm to spend and is pretty much in line with what we have been doing. That puts our cap at 187mm. I'll use a rookie pool of 5mm for 2 classes and a league minimum of 700k.

Offense:
Under contract 11 players (85.62mm)
7 new draftees (5mm)
6 min salaries (4.2mm)
Total: 24 players at 94.82mm

QB: Romo, Dak (26mm)
RB: EE, Jackson (7.45)
WR: Dez, Beas (20.75)
TE: Hanna, Swaim (4.22)
OL: Smith, Fred, Chaz ( 27.2)

Gone for now: Morris, McFadden, Dunbar, TWil, Butler, Written, Escobar, Martin, Collins, Free, Leary.

Defense:
Under contract 16 players at 43.2mm
7 new draftees (5mm)
1 min salary (700k)
Total: 24 players at 48.9mm

DE: Mawoya, Puff, Tapper, Russell (6.63)
DT: Crawford, Thornton, Collins ( 15.15)
LB: Lee, Smith, Wilson, NZ (11.22)
CB: OScan, Brown (4.86)
S: Jones, Heath, Frazier (5.34)

Gone for now: DLaw, Irving, McClains, Hitchens, Durant, Mo, Carr, Church, Wilcox

Special Teams:
Under contract: Bailey at 4.2mm
2 min salaries (1.4mm)
Total: 3 players at 5.6mm

Gone for now: Jones, Frenchy

Grand total: 149.32mm. That leaves a tad over 37mm to round out the roster. I'll let you GMs play with it from here, but I will throw out one hypothetical.

Let's say we sign Martin and Collins. I'll say 17mm gets used up here, after knocking off 2 min salaries. The first season will be cheaper, but I'm just going to assume that money gets used up on some short term vets to fill holes at wr, te, swing tackle, etc.

On defense, that would leave 20mm to cover a ton of holes. 12 mm for DLaw, 6mm for Mo, Carr, or another CB, 2mm for any safety with a pulse, and our money is all gone. The same applies on this side of the ball. We have a few mil to fill holes short term, but no more room for long term high dollar contracts. The offense could / should be very good, assuming good QB play of course, but man does the D look like crap. Even if we draft well it's pretty sad.

By my middle school math, anything else you add of significance requires the subtraction of a similar contract.

its goina be tough

Not as tough as you think -- we always find a way to make it work as long as someone doesn't price them out above of our threshold for a position.

Guys I expect to be around include: Martin, Collins, Claiborne, Carr, Morris, Escobar, Lawrence, Hitchens, Punter Jones, and Louis-Phillippe.

Witten might play until he's 40.

Im not too concerned- every team is going to go through similar issues-

Salary Cap is really just a made up number that we can work around.

And if someone leaves ten we get the comp pick (a small consolation) and we build through the draft. If Martin wants 11 Million as a guard we say thanks and move on.

If Martin wants $11M as a guard, you give him $11M. It's not too often that you draft rookie offensive linemen, and build an offensive line that is so integral to the success of your team, and that rookie is an All-Pro and then turns into a dominant force of the best unit in the league.

12 mil for DLaw?? Why??

If we get a couple good drafts I think the roster / money looks great

If we are talking about $12 Million, then we are also talking about 15 sacks...right?

I am sure the team has models of just about every scenario and more than what we as fans can come up with. Then will adjust those as things transpires.
I wouldn't doubt they have this projected out to 2020 easily.

Relax people, Martin isn't going anywhere. The cap is a soft cap and can be "adjusted" when needed. Besides, he's under contract for 3 more years with the 5th year option.

I am not worried about him going anywhere. That is the least of my concerns. Actually I don't get concerned over the cap at all.

More like 10-12, and I probably should have said DLaw or any competent pass rusher.

Cap is fluid....we can make adjustments as we go. It is always a challenge but workable. We will find a way to keep the ones we want. The only player we should have kept was Ware but it appeared he was on the decline and his cap number was ridiculous. He has missed a lot of time in Denver and just came off injury list again....has had 10 sacks and 7.5 sacks the last two years...good but not great.

It is an exercise in futility, every year fans worry about the salary cap and who we can sign and who we can't and the reality is that we sign who we want regardless by adjusting players and yet again we know not who will be here and who want. Take Romo for instance, we believe he will be the starter in 2018 but that is far from a reality, so what would his hit be like about $9 million which would free up some $16 million. By 2018, the NFL could increase the cap by a more substantial amount depending on a number of factors such as the 18 game schedule that the NFL is trying to get the NFLPA to agree to which also would bring a higher number of people kept i.e. 60 instead of 53. The most likely situation is that the Cowboys will extend Martin and Collins sometime this year before the new NFL year starts and next year it is likely to be Lawrence. Will Witten retire, good question. Will someone replace Beasley, maybe. Lots to go but frankly I won't be surprised to see the cap at $200 million in 2018.

This entire thread went out the window when you hinted we might want to resign Carr.

First, the cap is going to go WAY up.

Second, the cap is a myth. Teams can sign whoever they want, whenever they want, just by moving numbers around.

Shouldnt the cap be up 20-26million by then. Its been increasing every year lately. We good, teams always seem to have the room to do what they need especially w cap increases 10-13 mill each year.
