Round 1

2023

Mazi Smith
: After a horrible rookie year, began to began to show gradual improvement this year. However still a sub average NFL starter. May end up a player who is a decent starter that never quite lives up to his draft slot.Improvement in 2025 will be something to watch

2024

Tyler Guyton:
Struggled mightily against a gauntlet of elite rushers than got hurt smd benched. He did show promise, but has a ways to go

Round 2

2023

Luke Schoonmaker:
Provided next to nothing as a rookie. In year 2 really showed signs of life when Ferguson got hurt. Like Smith, could wind up a solid player that never lives up to his draft slot

2024

Marshawn Kneeland:
Showed alot of promise during preseason and Week 1 before getting hurt. Has been solid since returning. At this point its hard to tell if he will be an impact player or more of a Chauncey Golston. However he does look like a solid DLman

Round 3

2023

DeMarvion Overshown:
Hurt as a rookie, looked like a star caliber LB in year 2. Another knee injury dims his career outlook. Strong but unfortunate pick

2024

Cooper Beebe:
Very solid rookie year after ttransitioning to OC. Play level was that of an average NFL starter and has displayed the potential of an Pro Bowl caliber OC/OG. Another strong pick

Marist Liufau: Showed flashes as a rotational player before Overshown got hurt. Looked good in a bigger role after Overshown's injury. Looks like it could be another strong pick. However 5 missed tackles in the last 3 games is concerning

Round 4

2023

Viliami Fehoko:
Dead and gone

Round 5

2023

Asim Richards:
Showed alot of potential playing OT in 2024. A very strong pick even if he never becomes a full time starter. He does have starter potential

2024

Caelen Carson:
Has struggled mightily after a strong pre season. Has allowed a 76% completion rate and a QBR of 125 in 250 snaps. Will have to earn a roster spot next season

Round 6

2023

Eric Scott
: Dead and gone

Duece Vaughn: The fan darling has struggled to take advantage of touches. He has averaged 2.1 yards a carry and 5.8 yards a catch. Probably not going to be on the 2025 roster

2024

Ryan Flournoy:
Hasnt gotten much of an opportunity, but did have a strong game against TB. 44% of the special teams snaps, so a good chance he is on the 2025 roster

Round 7

2023

Jalen Brooks:
Showed promise in limited action as a rookie, but performed very poorly when given a role in 2024. Has caught only 40% of his targets. Plays ST, so has a chance at the 2025 roster. But Flournoy could be ahead of him

2024

Nathan Thomas:
Not much to go on with Thomas. Dont even remember how he did in camp/preseason. However he was still good value at his draft slot and has the talent to be a versatile backup

Justin Rogers: A foolish cut after a solid preseason. Should have been kept on the 54. Luckily we were able to poach him back. Has the potential to be a decent rotational big DT

Some thoughts overall:

- We have gone low ceiling in the 1st the last two drafts and have paid for it this year

- Asim Richards may wind up the only quality player we get from day 3 in these two drafts

- We have done poorly with day 3 skill players. Jury is out on Flournoy, but not being able to get playing time over Brooks is not a good sign

The bigger measure is how we are drafting relative to other teams. We are about in the average range. After round 3, we might as well have no picks and it shows up in the team depth charts.
Cutting a 4th round pick just one year later is awful. We have done well in years past, but the scouting department really need to be questioned with the last two drafts. Could be why they seem non committal with McClay all of a sudden

I think McClay has gotten complacent. Where are the late round gems? This scouting department is being lapped by the Eagles and Skins.

Could be. Im not an All Hail McClay guy, but he has consistently hot the 3 to 4 starter thresholds in his drafts. Most of the guys picked on day 3 the last two drafts wont make it to their third year

Well, when you have a lot of below NFL average starters, it shouldn't be hard to come up with starters. We can't be drafting projects in round 1 and back-ups in round 2. Tyron never should have been replaced by a guy who barely sniffed the LT position in college. Guyton was the 8th OT off the board for a reason. If we aren't going to find anything on day 3, the day 1 and 2 picks needs to be not only starters but upgrades.

A lot to digest. But a few notes to consider. Mazi was extremely mismanaged his rookie year. We all know that. Schoon was hurt his rookie year. Fought like hell just to get back on the field. We all know that. Liufau is a rookie. Mistakes happen. Carson was expected to struggle because he is a 5th round rookie. Vaughn - exactly what touches did he fail to take advantage of? He hasn't been given any kind of chance.

Bottom line is these guys deserve at least a chance. Both in terms of time and on the field. And don't forget about the wonky coaching staff and their idiotic way of doing things.

Vaughn doesnt get more touches because he didnt do anything with the ones he got. 2.1 yards a carry on 34 carries. Thats awful. Plus he is a liability as a blocker

You cant just blame coaches for every players poor performance. More often than not the player is bad, and not the coach miss using him. People like to use coaches as an excuse for a poorly performing player but often doesnt give a real or compelling example of how the coach is misusing the play

Vaughn hasn't got any opportunities at all. Being thrown in isn't how he is to be used. Of all the mismanaged players on the roster he might be on the top of the list.

He hasnt gotten opportunities this year based on how little did with the ones he got in 2023. If we had made a real move at adding talent at the position, he would have been cut

I didn't. All I said was "don't forget". It's definitely a factor. Especially with players like Vaughn and Mazi. There are others as well.
You also didn't explain how players had been misused. Its a classic tactic used by people who want to deflect blame on poorly performing players.

Who has been misused and how have the been misused and how should the be used

So he can only excel on plays specially designed for him?
I'm dropping this conversation and nonsense. Leaving with this. We know what he did at K-St. We know what works and what doesn't. We know what McCarthy said when they drafted him. Very clearly the Cowboys have no clue how to use him and have failed with him in every way possible.
