IMHO if you want to know why this team comes up short every year have a look at the cap hits for next year for the top 6 guys. It is pretty gruesome. 144 million for Dak, D Flaw, Zack, Tyron, Zeke and Gallup. Quite frankly I just can't imagine ever doing worse. Throw in another 9 million on Lael Collins and you have spent 67% of your salary cap and have gotten basically nowhere.

Zero team depth. Zero team accountability. Zero leadership from the top.

So many players had fantastic seasons and a fantastic playoff run on fantastic team friendly contracts only to be flushed down the toilet by the "stars" of the team.

Jerry sure does like his guys.

If they move on from Zeke and Tyron, that should help. Players like Martin are prime candidates for restructuring, though he is nearing the twilight of his career. Dead money has always been an issue for the cowboys. They have a terrible weakness of paying good players top contracts and then ending up with a balloon payment in dead money after letting them go after shortsighted restructuring. Just not smart planning on their part. They do draft well, but not everyone is worth keeping on board after their rookie deal. It would be nice to see them trade a good player on his rookie deal once in a while for some draft capital.

The cap is not a big deal.

Restructure Prescott, Lawrence, and Martin. Cut Lewis and Hooker.

That could save you 45 million this year or more if they wish.

Teams get around the cap all the time.

It might not be a big deal for that particular year but it will come back to bite you in the future. At one point it will be a massive deal for you.

You are expecting competence from this front office, right ?

The interesting thing is 5 of the 6 are on the offensive side of the ball. In addition, look at each player:

Dak: 30 years old in 2023 and yet to get the team over the hump
Zeke: 28 years old in 2023 and the treads have long gone on the tires
Tyron: 33 years old in 2023 and injuries have devastated him the last few years where he is a part-time starter
Zack: 33 years old in 2023 and still playing at a high level
Gallup: 27 years old in 2023 and still not fully recovered from a bad injury
DLaw: 31 years old in 2023 and while paid as a top pass rusher he has become more of a run stuffer

So when the top 6 salaries are going to a majority of guys that are injury prone or whose better days have passed them by it is a problem.

Everything about this is so wrong. You know better.

Why can't people understand the Cowboys contracts are all written to be restructured?

^ This. We constantly hear about the cap from SJ and yet other teams manipulate it constantly. We aren't players in FA because our lack of a good GM.

Why cut Hooker? The guy has played good and still young.

I don't think he's ever been good at cap management when he was a risk taker. So he chooses to be conservative.

Manipulating the cap has its limits, or else we'd see stacked teams like we had in the 80s and 90s. Jerry just isn't very good at it, or can't be bothered.

You have Kearse, Wilson, and Hooker.

I think Dallas needs to resign Wilson. Kearse is viewed as the QB of the secondary. Hooker played good enough to keep, but when going through names that could be cap casualties he's one.

These are just examples. You could keep Hooker and save 40 million instead of 45. There are so many scenarios, this is just one.

I thought cap boy was a wizard with the cap?

Prescot should be arrested for stealing millions against the Boys. Picked their pockets clean and didn't do a dam thing to earn it!

I’m definitely keeping Hooker over any of the 3. Kearse and Wilson make splash plays but we can find box safety’s. Malik is the fastest and has range. His open field tackling also was impressive.
