2026 FIFA World Cup Thread

There are some good NTs in Africa - CAF would be significantly stronger that Concacaf.

Notwithstanding, I still dont see Morroco as being contenders. There'd always one or two mediocre teams who manage to reach the quarters.

P.S. Dont go by "world ranking" - the formula significantly over values non-European teams. Several of the ranked teams wouldnt survive European or South American qualifiers.
Mediocre?

Morroco is the current African Champion, won gold medal with their u-23 vs Argentina in 2024 and 4th place in 2022 word cup.

Mediocre? Lots of European nations wish that kind of success is that short period of time.

They are far from mediocre coming from an African nation.

Mexico was a pretty good team in 2002. They won their group that contained Italy and Croatia. We beat them 2-0. We lost 0-1 to Germany. The team that went to the finals. They did not dominate us. We had countless chances to tie that game up. That team was better than this one.

I was worried about one thing, and I mentioned it back during the group stage. I was worried about our defense when it came to the point we did not dominate possession. It was actually worse than I thought. Our offense too. How many chances did the US generate in the first half? Hardly any. While Belgium had nearly two dozen.
That was my point. That 2002 team was a pretty good all around team. We beat Mexico because we were use to playing them and have beaten them before. We almost beat Germany in the quarters. I think in the first 5 mins of this game Belgium put a lot of pressure on the US and they started playing scared. They might have thought here we go again and I don’t want to get embarrassed like we did back in March by this team( Belgium schooled the US beating them 5-2). I don’t know what it was but they did not look confident on the ball like previous game. Hats off to Belgium for their game plan. They looked liked a cohesive unit out there

This is fixed. No way should that goal have been taken away. They don't scrutinize all goals like that.

Yes they do.
NO, they don't. The tying goal Belgium got against Senegal, the Belgium player pushed the Senegal player to get the header. Never reviewed. Had it been reviewed, the goal would have been disallowed. But in this game, a play that happened over 100 yards away was only reviewed because Egypt scored. That's nuts. Go look at the replay yourself.

The var booth looks at every goal and informs the ref if there is anything to question. We, the viewer, aren't always as aware of that process as at other times, such as today's game.

That was pathetic display of soccer that the US put on tonight. It look like they were afraid to have the ball and had no confidence at all. Besides the huge mental errors every player had a terrible game and when that happens it will be a disaster in which it was. We are just not on the same page yet as the powerhouses are. Let’s not forget that the reason we went to the quarterfinals in 2002 was because we played against Mexico. A team that is in our region but is not a powerhouse in soccer like Belgium, Spain, France, etc
All the drama around the red card issue affected them it seems.

Ok, I get it. It just seemed like they went out of their way to reach today. Closed their eyes in the match against Senegal.

That's the problem with var. It's supposed to remove errors by removing opinion but all it does is impose someone else's opinion on things. The var is no more likely to see things 'our way' than the ref is. Personally, I would rather get rid of var and go back to accepting that no ref can see everything or get every call correct.

Wow, even in the soccer world everyone crying about officiating…
Egypt coach saying officials cheated them…
Maybe the officials were watching their draftkings accounts…

I'm in agreement. However, what is looking at the offsides? Is it the same thing? Can't argue that.

Spain v France , England v Argentina is the dream for me... but okay with Norway beating England also.

Also I liked how Belgium played fundamentally sound soccer and just let us collapse on our own. So if they beat Spain, that would be kind of fun also.
