Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice didnt look like world beaters at their combines either...and where they got drafted was a result of some teams being incredibly stupid and paying attention to stuff like "they didnt light it up at the combine"

David

Ha... I thought of Emmitt too when I read that statement. The combine is useful to supplement the information you get from their college careers, but you can't put too much stock into their workouts, IMO. How they played the game is more important to the evaluation process, by far.

Look at how they played as the primary factor, particularly how they fared playing against good competition. Nelson is a very good football player IMO and a better one than Hall or Ross, no matter what position they play.

I do agree that CB is a harder to find position than FS and if you had two players of equal skill, one a corner and the other a safety, then I'd agree that you need to draft the corner. However, I wouldn't pass up a very good Safety to draft a just good corner. That would be silly, I think.

I always prefer to use a number one pick on a player in the front seven because I think dominant DL and linebackers are what makes a great defense. However, I think that Nelson is going to be a game changer and a catalytic player in the NFL for a long time. I wouldn't mind it at all if it was our's. He's just so fluid and natural out on the field. Regardless of his time in the 40, he looks faster than the other players and lifts the play of those around him. Besides, his workout wasn't bad, it just didn't set the world on fire.

Just watch... he's going to be dynamite for some team.

Who is Kris Deilman?
Dude, honestly. This forum has been talking about Dielman for weeks. Instead of creating new threads with one line questions try reading this forum. The answers are here. This is elementary.

Dielman is the OG at San Diego who is a UFA.

The more things unfold, the more I like we're sitting. With so many high-quality WR's and CB's available mid-round, I think we'll be able to get a good player who will be a starter soon.

As far as Weddle goes, he's a player though I would not take in the 1st but I would give it some thought in the 2nd dependent on the board. Unless God smiles upon thee and Landry showers hookers with bills and falls to #22, I forsee Watkins as starting FS.

If we sign Hamlin, then a guy like Ross or Hughes becomes more likely. I still havew strong feelings for Bowe/Meachem

Chris Houston out of Arkansas should be mentioned too, he looks great on tape, and had an outstanding combine(i only care about the combine when it comes to DB's because that shows their true db skills)

what do you think eric weddle form utah i think?? he would be a solid 2nd round pick

Is he a white dude??

im no racist or anything, just white DB's are in the minority (I think he was the only one at the combine if he is the one im thinking of)

After Stephen Jones' interview today here's what we know. RG and QB will be the targets in free agency this off season. Go ahead and pencil in Davis / Dielman or possibly Steinbach into the RG spot. Harrington or Rattay will probably be the backup QB. If this holds true and that's all Dallas really does in free agency one thing becomes VERY clear. Dallas will have no real holes on the team other than free safety depending on what you think about Watkins. Looking at the team with an addition of a starting RG and backup QB it's crystal clear what position Dallas will be targeting in the 1st round of the draft... A safety or a cornerback. My guy feeling is they take a CB unless Landry or Nelson falls to them.

QB-Romo
RB-Jones/Barber
FB-Hoyte
LT-Adams
LG-Kosier
C-Gurode
RG-Dielman / Davis - ***FA Signing***
RT-Columbo
TE-Witten
WR- Owens
WR-Glenn

DE-Spears
NT-Ferguson
DE-Canty
OLB-Ware
MLB-James
MLB-Ayodelle
OLB-Ellis
SS-Williams
FS- Reggie Nelson - ***1st Round Pick***
CB-Newman
CB-Henry

Now that's a starting lineup!

Great thread gosuns and I agree with everything you said. I also agree with BLT that #22 will probably be a CB. I don't think Nelson or Landry will fall so this drafting a FS stuff is a waste of time.

I would take any of the following at #22:

Nelson--As much as I like Watkins, Nelson is a too good a football player to let slip past

Bowe--He is a T.O/Anquan Boldin type....very physical, fearless and will play a long time in the league.

Ginn Jr--Hard to pass up that kind of talent.

Griffin--A football player....great compliment to RW.

Darelle Revis--Nice player, and would provide good insurance depending on Henry's situation.

Jarvis Moss--Could be more productive in the NFL, especially working in Phillips' system

Not a bad list.

Not all positions are created equal. Some positions just aren't places that you like to spend first rounders on. Safeties aren't usually taken in the first round nearly as much as CB's are. DT's are taken round 1 a lot because the true difference makers are hard to find outside of the first round. DE's too. Fullbacks are almost never taken in the first round and more and more it's looking like teams are finding RB's outside of the first round too.

Here's your list with just a few things I might do differently:

Nelson or Landry - I think both will be great safeties and would love either one... but I'm afraid both will be long gone before #22. I'm not crazy about using a number 1 pick on a safety, particularly when we already have one that we used a first rounder on... but Nelson and Landry are both very much worth it. Especially Landry.

Bowe - The closer we get to April, the more I'm liking Bowe. Big, strong, good hands. He will be a good one. I'm not big on first round WR's... but I'd like to see him in Dallas if Ireland likes him enough to take him.

Ginn Jr. - He's such an athlete. I wouldn't mind it at all... but he's a little raw and like I said... I like to take WR's in later rounds, but I'll be okay if we take Ginn because he can change the field position so quickly as a WR and as a kick returner.

Griffin - I'd go in another direction.

Revis - I like him but I like Houston more if he's there. I think this would be a very good direction to go in. Houston could play opposite Newman as a rookie and excel. Henry was lights out as a FS in Cleveland and he would be a huge upgrade at FS for us. Houston, I think would be a better corner than Henry I think because Henry is a little slow for CB. This would upgrade two spots on defense. Plus, CB is a position that I feel comfortable spending a first rounder on... moreso than safety.

Moss - His first step is dynamite and a QB killer. I'd love to see Moss brought in to play opposite Ware. The passrush is such an important aspect of playing defense that I wouldn't mind spending yet another first rounder on an OLB. What could Wade Phillips do with Ware and Moss rushing the QB? It would be a beautiful thing to watch. Let Carpenter battle it out inside with James and Ayodele and may the best man win. Great depth. I'm always okay with spending a first round pick on the pass rush.

if we could sign a RG, OB, FS and our current FA's the offseason would be a nice start. Then in the draft we could focus on CB, WR, NT, OT, K. If we could fill those positions with our first 5 picks along with FA we should have a very good team. Plus there are still the remaining picks to use for BPA. My choice in the first round would be BPA between CB and WR.

Let's see....we've drafted 1st round defense how many years now?

We hire a 3-4 defensive specialist as head coach.....that hopefully will raise the level of the existing defense....

Folks....it's time to pump up that offense, inject some youth and find us some instant offense, a playmaker, a threat.

I think your right Jack. I'm not locked in on offense but at some point, you have to address both sides of the ball. We got lucky with Romo but you can't count on drafting All Pro TEs in the third or walk on Franchise QBs on a consistant basis.

I agree with your perspective.

I really find it hard to defend worrying about an offense that scored 425 points. And that SHOULD be better this year, with a QB that is learning and what should be an improved O line.

Also, if this is all we do in Free Agency, I wonder who/when will be the first to freak out about us not doing anything. It's a yearly tradition

I personally will throw a party. In fact I would like to see our rg come from the draft also.

I do believe we have to get the backup qb in free agency and harrington is a perfect fit.

I was hoping drew stanton would slip to the second round and we would take him. I think that would put us in great position for the future.
