With the players we have what would it take to change to a 3-4? Are any of them a good fit for a 3-4 now?

Does anyone really run a traditional base 3-4? I know the Pats run all kinds of different sets.

I’m not a fan of the 3-4, it’s weak against the run and you didn’t yourself drafting players to fit in a system that could be thrown out in a few years.

I’d rather the team run different lineups throughout the game to be unpredictable.

but to answer your question...no. We just paid 90 million to a 4-3 DE.

What we need are big fat DT's. And, I dunno....Maybe draft a significant player early in the draft? That hasn't happened since Maryland. Wrap your head around that.

Parcels set us back for years on that and when they went back to the 4-3, it set them back more.
I still think they are trying to recover, as they have not got it right yet.

Oh, man, maybe I shouldn't post this, it will give Jerry an added excuse to keep Garrett. :muttley:

I'm not absolutely opposed to the 3-4, but it's harder to get the right players for it. I would only be okay with it if it were what would work best for the new coach. Otherwise, I'm more of a 4 - 3 guy.

This team is terribad at the 3-4. I could not wait for them to switch back to the 4-3 years back. Even when parcells bought it here, they were BDB at best.

And put Dlaw in coverage? Lol

only one cut out maybe is Jaylon as he could just rush the passer full time

In a 3-4 you have Quinn as a LB, maybe Lawrence too. I am not sure who on this team could play DE in a 3-4. Not sure who would be the NT either. I would not want to rebuild that much just to switch to a defense that I think is not as effective anymore.

Parcells set this D back some time. Parcells did away with a top 10 4-3 D for a middle of the pack 3-4. Then he had a 4-3 coach (Mike Zimmer) to oversee it. Wade gave it more life when he came. But take into account the wasted draft picks by Jerruah(2009 ), Parcells Bobby Carpenter pick, lack of drafting DL, the 3-4 D became doom. But it's hard drafting players for it as players transit better in the 4-3 since it's played a lot in college. We was able to plug Collins in as a rook due to that. Maybe the largest reason we pick Taco over TJ Watt, unfortunately.

Parcells got us 10 wins with that defense and Quincy crackhead Carter and if not for a botched snap would of had us in the super bowl too.

Yep!! I still have nightmares about what could have been with DWare had we had a monster NT to push the middle back into the QB's face.

Parcells ran a 4-3 in 2003 ..not a 3-4..He didn't switch until the following year.

WE COULD OF HAD TJ WATT IF WE RAN THE 3-4

NEVER FORGET!!! (jk)

I would say now the lines are blurred. Think the only difference would be you would want your edge rushers to have the ability to stand up and pass rush and have their hand in the dirt depending on the style and position you run from the 3-4 alignment.

I always thought the down fall of the 3-4 here was the lack of a 3 down ILBs. And the fact they could get a consistent pressure from the SOLB
James was a good 2 down LB but got exposed in coverage.
Brooking and Zach Thomas were too old and slow when they got here. Then we had average to below guys like Slingeton, Akin Ayodele, Scott Fujita, Scott Shanle, Ryan Fowler.

Obviously Sean Lee was a godsend but by then IIRC it was just Ware and a bunch of almost sacks by everyone else.

- yeh, having to force DLaw into playing a 3-4 OLB would be like seeing another Javeon Clowney or Mario Williams being asked to play OLB in the 3-4.
and it may take a longer time in investing and adjustment period than staying with the current 4-3 status quo.

- I can see why some teams and coaches prefer the 3-4 scheme, as I heard from past great QBs how its' difficult sometimes to get a clue of who is coming from what side
and who is dropping immediately into passing lanes. As with any scheme it depends upon the DC and player personnel.

- But I still envision ..and covet a Saints like 4-3 scheme here, with top edge rushers like Jordan/Davenport bookends to go along with the idea interior presence DTs with a Brown/Rankings, etc.
(although Rankings still in a recovery mode year)
