3-4 defense

Defense looked out of sync mostly what ever the formation. They held the edge well enough but the motions and boots killed them early. LB and DT play was weak and the SS was terrible.

They settled down or adjusted in the 2nd half and held the Rams to 20 points. The offense let that game go with 17 points. 17 isn't going to win very many games no matter what your defense is doing.
exactly..

I need to see the All 22 on Griffen I know he had some issues with the run but I thought he had a few splash plays.....

Griffen shouldn't be at DT for the run. Too small. That should only be an option for clear passing downs. But we've got so little at DT. Crawford blew chunks. Poe too. We are *so* lucky the light has come on for Hill. He gives us *something* as a legitimate pass rushing DT.

I mean the McCoy injury hurt us. Not saying he was going to be All-World because never believed that but he gave us a DT who knew what he was doing. To have to revert back to Crawford there sucks. Based what's on the roster there do they have a more viable option than playing Griffin or Lawrence there? Then there's going time when Gregory comes back....on passing downs you very well may see Gregory, Aldon, Griffin and Lawrence out there.

There's just too much going on here and I'm afraid that this defense won't be right until they actually draft guys to play those positions. Or until Gallimore and Hill are ready.

Lawrence standing makes no sense whatsoever. I've posted about this several times but it accentuates his weaknesses (like poor leverage and high pad height) and negates his few good qualities. It was a terribly called game by Nolan all around. But, it was also their first game after a shortened offseason with no preseason. Now he knows Lawrence is all talk. Hopefully he puts his hand in the dirt more and blitzes Jaylon because Jaylon and Tank were both God awful.

Oh yeah, the McCoy injury hurt us. I thought we were *already* hurting on the dline, especially for DT pass rush, before he was hurt.

Losing McCoy was big. Poe looking like *ss is big too. Crawford looking worse than ever too.

At least Hill is showing some positives. He and AWoods are the only competent DTs I see.

No options unless we just give up on Crawford or Poe. There was some noise that Justin Hamilton was looking ok.

Could just play Gallimore more and hope he improves. Not unreasonable. And at least that pays dividends for the future.

I asked people why Poe wasn't retained for the Panthers last year and everyone told me it was because of injuries and because McCoy got hurt. I'm not writing Poe off but I think people just think all you gotta do is be fat and be good. I'm not of that belief at all.

I do think when Nolan tried to blitz in the second half, we were getting pressure on Goff and it threw him off.

I dont necessarily think blitzing all the time is the answer but it would be nice to have a defense that gets some free runs at the qb.

Many times I remember watching our defense under Rod where the blitz was easily identified pre snap and picked up which essentially did nothing but give the QB less defenders to play the pass and still enough time to pick us apart.

I'm not too excited about the chances of our defense making a complete turnaround but not forcing one first half punt is awful.

Whatever formation we play and whoever is playing, we need to figure it out quickly if we want to have a chance against the better teams.

The falcons are a different team and while our secondary wasnt awful this week, expect them to be put to the test in a big way with one of the best wr's in the game on the field. I have nightmares of Calvin Johnson just running wild on our terrible secondary and don't think I can stand to see it again this week.

Poe is an option next year too. He's not ancient at 30. I wouldn't give up on him either.
Crawford, on the other hand ...

I suppose Crawford has been out of the game for a while. Maybe some legitimate rust.

We can have a decent rotation if Poe comes back and Crawford can give us some pass rush. New defense for everyone too.

I expect they get better, but one or both may just be done.

Poe looks fat to me and it also looks like the years in the pits have not been kind to him, he can barely walk. He may be done.

Did we move back to the 3-4? Or where we just mixing it up on D? I thought I seen a lot of 3 down lineman sets
I explained the Mike Nolan defense multiple times this offseason.

It is a multiple front defense.
Run Defense
4 DL + Aldon Smith standing up + 2 LBs

Pass Defense
4-2-5 Nickel (A.S. at DE)

Run & Pass Defense
3 DL + 2 stand up DEs + 2 LBs

That run D is almost a 5-2.

They even played both Poe & Woods together at DT on some snaps (350 + 320 pounds).

The concept is to stop the run with 7 in the box.

he’s terrible.

needs cut from the roster.

plus, he’s poison to some of the fan base.

They need to simplify things.

play their best 4 DL more.

too much rotation.

stop playing off man coverage so much.

can you believe they are paying Poe 8.5 million???

he’s terrible.

Mostly 4-3 all game. Bad game for the fat DT that you all wanted. But that could have been a coaching thing. Settled down as the game went on.

What I didn't like - Griffens alignment inside (he's an edge rusher) , and lawrence and Griffen standing up far too much for my taste.

What I did like - Nolan adjusted in the second half and started sending a cross dog every now and then and refused to sit back and allow Goff to be comfortable.

8.5mil over two years. Didn't seem so bad.

He was awful, though. I wonder if the big fatties are were hardest hit by the lack of offseason training and a full preseason.

So why not sign Snacks Harrison and line him up on the inside with D. Poe: Harrison 6' 3" 351 pounds Poe 6' 3" 346 pounds

You have 2 space eaters in the middle to occupy the LG-C-RG

Then have Lawrence as the LDE and Griffen and the RDE with Aldon Smith playing a DL/rushing LB role with J. Smith and J. Thomas as the 2 LB's thereby having a hybrid 5-2/4-3 defense.

Dallas then has a stout run defense in the middle while getting pass rushers/run defenders on the outside and A. Smith as a dual role DL/LB.

We need to go 3-4 this game. We have guys who can rush standing up, requiring only 2 real LB’s on the field and allowing our best pass rushers to turn it loose. Also, the 3-4 is the best defense vs the run, which will be critical this game. We need to take the run away early.
