3-4 Defensive Coordinators??

I have no problem with garrett becoming the head coach as long as he's showing promise calling the plays the rest of the season cause I'm tired of hiring stop gap coaches that dont have a future with the team. I wanna be able to hire a young up and coming coach that can be here for the forseeable future and I think Garrett fits the build for us. The problem in the league nowadays is the revolving door at the coaching position. You only need to look at organizations like Pittsburg and Tennessee that have shown pretty consistent success in the league for coaching models.

On your last point Rivera isnt a bad option in my opinion either. Before we hired Wade he was really making a point to sell himself to the organzation when he was being interviewed about possibly coaching in Dallas. I think he has the fire and enthusiasm that I good coach needs but how competent is he in running a 3-4 defense seeing how he ran the 4-3 mostly?

Strongly agree!!

You know who I'd really like?

Someone the new Head Coach picked and not the owner.

Well according to rumors, Capers would have been Garrett's pick.

We're 1-0 and going into one of the biggest games in franchise's history (opening of this awesome stadium) against a bigtime divisional opponent, and this is what people want to talk about?

there are no big games in September.

Sure there is. In the NFL team's can't afford to lose many game be it at the start or finish of the season.

If you dont like the topic of discusion in this thread hit the back button and go hit up one of the other numerous threads that are discussing the big divisional game that approaches on Sunday. Last time I checked this is still at Cowboys message board filled with cowboy fans to discuss the team and related topics. I had a hypothetical question that I was curious about and thought would make for good discussion on our board and with the 2pages that are already on this thread topic I was correct in my assumption thank you very much sir

No one has been able to run the Phillips 3-4 like Bum or Wade. No one. Not one of Wade's disciples has been successful:

Ted Cotrell
Charlie Waters
Brian Stewart
Greg Manusky (jury is still out_but his pass rush is nowhere close to Wade's)

And there is no one on the current D staff that I would want as D-Coord, I mean there is NO ONE. Grantham, Campo, Herring, etc. are all position guys, at best.

Going after one of LeBeau's disciples or one of Rex Ryan's assistants is the best option. Somehow, someway I want to see Thurman and Norton as assistant D coaches.

If Wade is 86'ed put your money on Herring being promoted to DC. Highly respected by the entire Defense and intense.

I like Herrings fire but you never know about Jerry

Release: 08/05/2006 Reggie Herring is in his third season as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In his 25th season as a collegiate coach and his 27th overall, he joined Houston Nutt’s staff on Dec. 4, 2004, after one season as the defensive coordinator at North Carolina State

In 2005, Herring’s first squad at Arkansas showed tremendous improvement throughout the season, finishing sixth in the SEC and 35th in the nation in rushing defense (132.5), 45th in the nation in passing defense (209.4) and 34th in the country in total defense (341). Over the final five games of the year, the Razorbacks allowed just 243 yards per game.

In Herring’s one season at North Carolina State, the Wolfpack led the nation in total defense, allowing just 221.36 yards per game after giving up 421 and ranking No. 89 the previous year. NCSU also led the nation in pass efficiency defense (91.77), was second in total pass defense (119), 13th in rushing defense (102.36) and 25th in scoring (19.82).

Before going to NC State, he served two seasons as the linebackers coach for the NFL’s Houston Texans under head coach Dom Capers. In 2003, Texans’ linebacker Jamie Sharper led the NFL with 164 tackles.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Jimmy Johnson at Oklahoma State in 1981. Johnson promoted Herring to full-time linebackers coach in 1982. He served in that role for Johnson and Pat Jones until 1985.

AH HA IF you can't have Jimmy get someone was coaached by him

he be my choice any way I watched a lot Ark games he was in soimebodies face almost every time the D came off

Someone that will fire Campo.

Really, I don't know. Maybe someone from Pittsburgh or NE that we think might be ready? If Wade gets fired, I'm going to assume that the D was poor, and in that case I'd rather have a fresh voice in here. I like Herring, but he doesn't have any experience, and who's to say he's not another Ted Cottrell?

I don't keep up with Virginia's program, but they've gotten killed by lower-tier teams the last two week. Maybe Garrett can get some castoff from there, like Al Groh.

OMG how old is Al Groh 150 ?????????? or just 145 ?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Herring or maybe Grantham become D-Coordinator. I've pretty much become resigned to the fact that Garrett will become our new head coach after Wade is gone. If by some reason he doesn't, then I think we need to hire a Defensive head coach like Cowher or Ron Rivera (who I think will be a great HC).

YAKUZA

Sorry no way do I want to even see Cowher in a Cowboys anything
this includes Shanny - Holmgren - Gruden

give me Billick before any of those clowns

now I would take Rivera

BING~! Thats who im hoping for. Guy is intense and knows his stuff.

Just curious, why don't you like Capers?
Because he's a terrible coach and has been living off a reputation built on a few good seasons in the 90s.

I'm kinda torn with the idea of Herring. I watched him a lot during training camp and I like the way he coaches. He commands respect and is always coaching someone up. He moves around a lot and is constantly on the players, telling them what they should be doing, etc. That makes me think he's a smart guy, but his lack of NFL experience (he's spent the vast majority of his 30 year coaching career in college) makes me wonder. Perhaps that was a personal choice or perhaps no one thought highly enough of him to give him a job.

I would go for Vic Fangio from the Ravens. He's already had Herring and Grantham as assistants and worked for Capers and Rex Ryan as well.

Maybe Jerry should just give Wade a 10 yr extension.
